Go Ahead Eagles v Cambuur
🏟
Sunday 9th October – 11:15AM KO
A hit of confidence has hit both of these teams just lately. Go Ahead have started to pick up some results; they have Scandinavian midfielders Oliver Edvardsen and Willum Willumsson to thank. If you include a friendly in there, they have scored 13 times in their past five games. Add to that the fact they picked up a point at Ajax last time out, and things are looking up for head coach René Hake, who was largely unfancied since struggling with Utrecht last season and a poor start with the Eagles.
Remarkably, Cambuur beat PSV 3-0 last weekend. The visitors in particular will be buoyed. It will feel like the duck has been broken after underperforming on their xG for goals scored and failing to score in several of their games so far this season. Because of that, I think the away side will secure another good result to back up their PSV victory.
Despite Hake having a run of good results with the Eagles, Cambuur boss Henk de Jong is widely accepted to be a really good coach in the Eredivisie. His influence should not be forgotten either as these sides do battle to avoid being tipped for a relegation battle.

Feyenoord v FC Twente
🏟
Sunday 9th October – 1:30PM KO
Feyenoord arrive back from Denmark on Europa League duty to play one of the top five in Twente. Supporters from Rotterdam were not pleased with how their team squandered a two-goal lead at Midtjylland in a cumbersome performance.
Meanwhile, the Tukkers are not as strong on the road, but I think they will pose a number of problems in De Kuip – they’re a well-coached team without European commitments. I think this will play a factor on Sunday despite the home side having a small edge on paper in terms of quality.
It’s difficult to say who will start for Feyenoord in attacking positions. There are a few players who have been on the bench, who I think have more ability than those who have been starting. I really like Sebastian Szymanski; we’re yet to see the best of him in the Netherlands, but he did get a start on Thursday.
I hope we get a memorable top-five fixture! Feyenoord have looked a little off the boil lately, so it could be a shock win for Twente. Both teams to score may be a sensible bet, but there is good money to be made from Twente impressing Eredivisie followers once more that they are a very good side this season.

Heerenveen v PSV
🏟
Sunday 9th October – 3:45PM KO
PSV have a hectic run of difficult run of games coming up before the World Cup. Their ‘easiest’ one came away to Cambuur last weekend, but they lost 3-0! They have injuries, yes, yet Ruud van Nistelrooy is expected to be chasing the Eredivisie title (and get the better of a toiling Ajax) and finish in the top two of their Europa League group. After an encouraging start in charge, van Nistelrooy is under pressure, like Schreuder at Ajax.
A 1-5 win in Switzerland on Europa League duty on Thursday will get everyone thinking that PSV are back, and it was just a blip that they suffered; however, PSV are still without a handful of influential players, none more so than captain Luuk de Jong. De Jong offered a real aerial presence in the box, there is no other striker who offers the same threat in their squad, and he is a real leader for this young team, too.
Heerenveen – sitting in a handsome sixth place – are a defensively secure team that can play with five at the back and use their threat on the counter attack to increase the pressure on PSV. This could be a weekend of surprise results or edgy narrow wins for some of the league’s leading lights. I think PSV are going to struggle here, and a handicap is a given – even with Cody Gakpo in excellent form – that PSV have a tough away fixture with a side that will be the ‘best of the rest’ this season.

Vitesse Arnhem v Fortuna Sittard
🏟
Sunday 9th October – 7:00PM KO
In Phillip Cocu’s first game in charge of his former club as a player, Vitesse were not great as they fell to Twente 3-0. Cocu wouldn’t have been able to change much for that game, but one week later and some small adjustments will be made. Bringing a creative spark will be the first job to entertain home fans on Sunday evening.
Fortuna arrive in Arnhem on back-to-back wins, which is turning around a poor start to the campaign. There are some good players in their side, who I think can do some damage to Vitesse. Striker Burak Yilmaz has been stealing the show most weeks for Fortuna, but his presence in attack has sometimes hauled his side over the line in games. In time, I think there will be some more quality moments from some of the attacking midfielders playing behind Yilmaz, such as Mats Seuntjens, Inigo Cordoba and Cole Basset (to name but a few).
Because I’m expecting a reaction from Vitesse, I am struggling to back Fortuna to take all the points. That said, Fortuna will very much be in this game. There are enough attacking players to take advantage of another error from someone in Vitesse’s shakey back line.
