The truncated weekend of action in the MLS because of the internationals means there are just three matches, one of which will be between two teams from the Western Conference when Nashville SC host San Jose Earthquakes.
Both of these teams can be described as on the up. Nashville had a fairly slow start to the campaign but that was because their new home stadium wasn’t open but since they have been able to play there they have picked up form and now sit sixth in the table.
San Jose Earthquakes picked up just three points from their opening seven matches but a change in coach has seen them collect 11 points since then and in Jeremy Ebobisse they have the form striker in the league. He has nine goals to his name since the beginning of April.
Goals are actually a focus for me in this match. These two have already met in California this season and drew 2-2 but in this encounter both teams are without arguably their best defender in Walker Zimmerman for the home side and Francisco Calvo for the visitors. Both are on international duty.
San Jose can’t stop conceding goals on the road when they are at full strength defensively let alone when Calvo and left-back Marcos Lopez are both missing. They have shipped three times in their last three away games and four in the one before that.
Led by Hany Mukthar, potentially the best attacking player in MLS, Nashville SC are a constant threat going forward but they could be exposed without Zimmerman and Anibal Godoy. Nashville have scored at least two in four of their last five games and in three of their four home matches. I like over 2.5 goals here.

Sporting Kansas City v New England Revolution

The final game of the shortened weekend comes from Children’s Mercy Park where Sporting Kansas City look to move off the foot of the Western Conference table when they play host to the Supporters’ Shield holders New England Revolution.
The Revs began the season very quietly but they have picked up in recent times and will make the trip to Kansas City undefeated in five matches in MLS. In contrast, Kansas City opened up with two wins in their first five matches but have only won one in 10 since then.
A large reason for the problems Sporting Kansas City are enduring, aside from the fact their away form is terrible, is injuries are piling up and they could be without their first-choice from three in Alan Pulido who is definitely out, Daniel Salloi who is away with Hungary and Johnny Russell who is a doubt for the match. Add in Khirt Shelton is a doubt and Marinos Tzionis, another attacking option, is with Cyprus and the home side look very light up front.
New England will be missing top scorer Adam Buksa for this match but there are rumours he is heading to Europe permanently anyway so I suspect Bruce Arena is already preparing for life without the Poland international.
In Gustavo Bou and Carles Gil, the Revolution still have two class acts while Jozy Altidore knows the MLS scene inside out so I don’t think the Buksa absence will be felt as much as it might have been.
Kansas City look a bit of a mess and have just lost at home to the Vancouver Whitecaps who are nothing special. I think if there is a winner here it will be the improving Eastern Conference side.
