Wolves travel to Sunderland who are unbeaten at home across their three matches so far, picking up wins against both West Ham and Brentford at the Stadium of Light.

Vitor Pereira’s side had a mini revival just before the start of the international break, but are still hunting for their first win of the season in the Premier League.

There's a full breakdown of the latest Sunderland v Wolves Betting Stats ahead of kick-off.

Jorgen Strand Larsen to have 1+ Shots on Target

Strand Larsen is yet to register his first Premier League goal this term, but he has netted twice for Wolves against top flight opposition in the Carabao Cup. There were signs that Vitor Pereira’s side were finding their feet in Wolves’ matches just before the international break, with back to back 1-1 draws against Brighton and Tottenham.

These draws ended a run of five losses to start the Premier League season. Larsen should benefit from this gradual improvement and is priced pretty generously for a shot on target here. He’s had eight shots across his five Premier League appearances so far (1.97 per 90), with three of these finding the target (0.74 per 90).

Larsen managed to score 14 goals in his debut Premier League season, which is an excellent record for a striker that was new to the league. He averaged 1.18 shots on target per 90 across his 35 appearances, with an impressive 63% of his total attempts managing to find the target.

Noah Sadiki to Commit 1+ Fouls

Sadiki is a real asset in the middle of the park for Sunderland. A lot of the praise goes in the direction of Granit Xhaka, who has also been superb in the early parts of the season, but Sadiki is the legs in the Sunderland midfield and has covered more ground than any other player for the Black Cats this term.

This workmanlike approach has seen him commit nine fouls across his seven Premier League appearances (1.30 per 90), with the former Union St Gilloise player often charging into tackles and going on adventures to win the ball back for Regis Le Bris’ side.

This is also reflected in his tackle numbers (1.59 per 90), as well as his interceptions (1.44 per 90). Sadiki is a player that could really develop into a top central midfielder in the Premier League, with his approach being Kante-esc in how he goes about trying to pinch the ball back.

Over 3.5 Total Cards

Sunderland have seen 23 match cards across their seven Premier League games this season (3.28 per game - 13 received, 10 drawn). Wolves have seen 28 match cards across the same number of matches (4.0 per game). Both sides have also received a red card in this period, setting up what should be quite a feisty encounter.

Wolves rank second in the Premier League when it comes to fouls committed per game (13.7 per game), and also sit inside the top 10 when it comes to yellow cards (14). They are naturally an aggressive side and their poor start to the season has exacerbated this - Wolves also ranked second in the Premier League for fouls committed per game last term.

Newly promoted sides tend to find themselves towards the top of the card rankings come the end of the season. Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton all finished inside the top five in the Premier League when ranking for cards last term. I'm expecting plenty of cards here.

Over 1.5 Goals

I can see this being quite a slow burner, but the goals should eventually come, especially with the situation Wolves now find themselves in following their slow start to the campaign.

Sunderland aren’t the prettiest side in the world to watch, but Le Bris has made his side effective and competitive, which are essential traits if you want to survive in the Premier League. They’ve seen 2+ goals in three of their last five matches, and in each of their three games at the Stadium of Light so far.

Wolves have seen 2+ goals in each of their last four matches, managing to win just one of these matches, which was a Carabao Cup tie against Everton. Wolves have conceded more goals than any other side in the Premier League (11), so it’s hard to trust their backline to keep Sunderland out here, particularly seeing as Le Bris’ team have been clinical at home so far.

📈 Sunderland v Wolves Form & Tactics

Sunderland have been the most impressive of the newly promoted sides so far, having avoided defeat in five of their seven Premier League matches. Burnley and Leeds have also shown more fight already than the three newly promoted sides did last season, which gives an early indication that we may see one of the established Premier League teams drop down to the Championship next term.

The Black Cats’ performances at home have been particularly impressive, with two wins and a draw in front of their home fans so far. These performances have been built on a fierce organisation and an effective counter attacking structure. I still think Sunderland lack a consistent source of goals, which is something that’s missing from all three of the promoted sides, but Le Bris has more attacking options than both Leeds and Burnley, which could prove vital.

Wolves still have serious work to do if they want to avoid a relegation battle this year, though the side already look like one that could face the drop. There’s a lot of new faces in the Wolves team, without much overarching strategy, it seems as though the owners have been a bit too complacent in underestimating the strength of the newly promoted sides, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more additions to the squad in January.

Wolves have conceded more goals than any other Premier League side so far this season (11). This was an issue that Vitor Pereira managed to clean up last year after taking over from Gary O’Neil, but it appears as though the issues are deeply rooted.

📔 Sunderland v Wolves Formation & Team News

Vitor Pereira has had a bit more success with this Wolves side by switching to a 4-2-3-1 from a 3-4-3, which was the system that Wolves had been playing for over a year.

This switch earned Wolves their first points of the season against Brighton and Tottenham, but I don’t think it’ll be sustainable in improving their defensive record - they signed players with the 3-4-3 system in mind, including wingbacks, so this could be quite a difficult change long-term.

When it comes to injuries and absences, Wolves are set to be without defensive duo Matt Doherty and Toti Gomes, who are recovering from minor injury and illness. Pereira was sent off against Brighton, so he won’t be on the touchline for this game either.

Sunderland line up in a 4-2-3-1, which occasionally slips into a 4-3-3 depending on who is lining up in the middle of the park. They sit quite deep, but are willing to get forward when the opportunity presents itself, with multiple attacking threats including Isidior, Le Fee and Simon Adingra.

Sunderland’s most notable absence, in my opinion, is Habib Diarra. The former Strasbourg midfielder formed a brilliant relationship with Xhaka and Sadiki in a midfield trio that possessed all the attributes to be successful in the Premier League. They’ll also be without Reinildo here, who is suspended following his sending off against Aston Villa.
