Darwin Nunez to score first

The casual bettor who doesn’t follow South American football too closely, will probably expect Brazil to be favourites in this game and the weight of public money on them distorts the picture somewhat. However, there are so many question marks over this Brazil side.

Vinicius Junior, despite his relative lack of success with the Brazil national side, scored twice in the 4-1 victory over Paraguay to overcome a barren run of fixtures without a goal. However, because of his second yellow card in successive games, he will be suspended for this quarter-final, which is a big loss to Brazil.

The Uruguayans have looked incredibly impressive so far and have created chances in every game, as well as rarely being troubled defensively. Uruguay defeated Brazil in their last encounter and we expect them to be the better side this time around too. Unlike the Euros, the Copa America does not feature extra time if the scores are level after 90 minutes, so there may be a lottery of a penalty shootout. As such, our first pick is Uruguay Draw No Bet at 2.0.

Our second play leads us to the goalscorer markets. Liverpool fans may not recognise the player that Marcelo Bielsa has shaped in this current Uruguay side, he’s been simply phenomenal as a focal point for the team and has 2 goals in the competition so far. He has scored in 7 of his last 8 games, with the USA game his only blank in that run, which includes goals against Colombia, Argentina and Brazil, as well as a hat-trick against Mexico just before the Copa America.

In a game that could be decided by who is most clinical and the way that Uruguay press aggressively from the first minute, Darwin Nunez to be first goalscorer at 6.50 stands out as a great-priced.

📊 Uruguay Form and Stats

Uruguay have been in sparkling form following three wins from three, with a 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia and a comfortable 3-1 win against Panama, before a hard-fought, but comfortable, 1-0 victory over the USA. They had 24 shots on target across those 3 games and have played a brand of football symbolic of coach Marcelo Bielsa’s philosophy.

Their intensity levels dropped off against the USA but, likely because Uruguay had all but qualified and Marcelo Bielsa was banned from the touchline. For this encounter, we should see a return to the high-pressing, energetic, and swashbuckling style that we’ve come to know from this Uruguay team since he took charge.

Going further back, their last warm-up friendly was a 4-0 win over Mexico and in October and November of last year, they won back-to-back games against Brazil and the World Cup champions, Argentina, in Buenos Aires.

📊 Brazil Form and Stats

Brazil’s 3 games at the Copa America can be taken either with a glass-half-full or empty approach, while they have come through the group stage unbeaten, their opening day draw against Costa Rica has cost them dearly, with them now facing Uruguay in the quarter-final rather than Colombia’s match-up against Panama.

The Selecao struggled to create many chances of note against the Colombians and were a touch fortunate to scrape a draw from the game - their xGF was just 0.22. In addition, in their opening match against Costa Rica, where they went off as heavy 1.1 favourites, their xGF was just 1.33. The Paraguay match demonstrated that when Brazil click, they can create quality chances, with a much improved xGF of 4.22.

Recent friendlies in March, with a win against England and a 3-3 draw with Spain, show they are still a real threat and have performances in them, but the question remains whether it is enough to see off this Uruguay side in strong form.

⚔️ Uruguay v Brazil Head-to-Head

The two sides share a rich history going back to their first meeting in 1916. They’ve faced each other 79 times, with Brazil victorious in 40 encounters and Uruguay in 22. The Uruguayans won their last encounter in October of last year, but that was Uruguay’s only win in the last 13 fixtures between the two nations.

Darwin Nunez and Nicolas de la Cruz were on target on that occasion, and both are set to feature against Dorival Junior's side on Sunday.
