Frankfurt were also dealt a disappointing midweek result, as they suffered a 3-2 loss against Stuttgart. Once again, it was an entertaining spectacle with plenty of chances at both ends of the field, but the Eagles were pegged back after conceding late on. Goals have been a target all season when Frankfurt are playing - their average of 4.18 goals per game is only bettered by Bayern Munich. After 17 Bundesliga matches, Frankfurt have scored 35 goals and conceded 36, highlighting how their games tend to be quite open.

It finished 4-1 when these sides last met back in August, as Frankfurt ran riot at the Deutsche Bank Park. The Eagles racked up 18 shots and four big chances, which amounted to 2.74 xG - they were able to create high-quality chances at will.

Last season, Werder Bremen ranked third for total yellow cards accumulated in the Bundesliga, with a total of 75 after 34 matches. They were shown a further seven red cards throughout the campaign, highlighting their aggressive approach to defensive duties. Not much has changed this season, either. The Green-Whites are averaging 2.7 yellow cards per game, and have accrued the second-most red cards of any Bundesliga side this campaign.

Werder Bremen have been shown at least two cards in 13 of their 16 Bundesliga matches this season, failing to reach this mark against Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Mönchengladbach. In the former two matches, Bremen were comfortably beaten by 3-0 and 4-0 scorelines, respectively. Against Gladbach, Bremen won that game 4-0 - so none of those games were particularly competitive, which explains the lack of cards. This matchup against Frankfurt promises to be more tightly contested, which makes cards a target.

Michy Batshuayi and Jonathan Burkardt are two other long-term absentees from Frankfurt, which leaves the Eagles lacking attacking options. Younes Ebnoutalib has been drafted in from Elversburg, and he scored on his debut, but lasted just 20 minutes against Stuttgart last time out before picking up a knock himself - Frankfurt have been desperately unlucky with injuries this season.

Arnaud Kalimuendo is the only remaining fit centre forward for Frankfurt, and is set to lead the line this weekend. After joining from Nottingham Forest just a couple of weeks ago, the Frenchman got off to a positive start, providing an assist against Dortmund to help his side secure a point. Kalimuendo made his first start for Frankfurt midweek and looked sharp in the final third - he registered a total of four shots, with two hitting the target.

Frankfurt have still looked threatening in the final third despite missing key players, and against a side like Werder Bremen, should be able to carve out some good chances for their striker.

Frankfurt manager Dino Toppmoller had to contend without several key players midweek, with midfielders Can Uzun, Fares Chaibi, and Hugo Larsson all absent from the matchday squad. Oscar Hojlund has therefore been given the opportunity to start in back-to-back matches for the first time in his Frankfurt career.

The 20-year-old has featured sporadically this season, usually making brief cameo appearances off the bench, but he has looked eager to get stuck into duels when he does play. Hojlund is averaging 2.57 fouls per 90 this season and has committed multiple infringements in each of his last four appearances.

Considering he only featured off the bench for two of those matches, it just underlines how aggressive he can be in his challenges. Hojlund racked up three fouls against Hamburg despite only being introduced at half-time, after he was called for two fouls and was booked against Augsburg in the game prior.
