Both Bournemouth and Wolves had nightmare openers against two of the league’s best, but this one should be a fairer fight. From what I’ve seen, Bournemouth look the sharper side right now. Below, I’ll take you through all you need to know, and share the double I’m backing.

Bournemouth to Win

Bournemouth showed real promise on the opening weekend, looking sharp in possession and carving out chances at Anfield, even if the final scoreline didn’t go their way.

It was a performance that echoed last season’s underlying numbers, where they ranked third in the league for xPts, but underperformed in front of goal by just under 15xG.

The only difference this time was that they took their chances against Liverpool, with Semenyo’s clinical edge proving decisive.

Wolves, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a poor summer and a bruising start to the campaign. Defeats in three of their four pre-season fixtures, alongside a draw against Stoke, set the tone, and their 4-0 collapse against Man City was worrisome.

Under 3.5 Goals

As entertaining as Bournemouth and Wolves’ opening fixtures were, much of that owed to the quality of their opponents, and this match has all the makings of a quieter affair.

Last season, 26 of Wolves’ matches produced under 3.5 goals, as did a remarkable 89% of Bournemouth’s home games at the Vitality. Their matches on the south coast averaged just 2.04 goals, the fewest of any side by some stretch.

This line has landed in 12 of the 13 matches between Wolves and Bournemouth on record, with the only exception occurring as Bournemouth converted three penalties to lift the scoreline over the threshold.

🔴 Valiant Bournemouth Fall Short in Anfield Thriller

Despite eventually succumbing to Liverpool’s quality, Bournemouth put in a stoic performance in their league curtain-raiser, fighting back from two down to level things up at Anfield, before two late goals sealed their fate.

At times, the Cherries looked the side most likely to claim all three points, with Semenyo in particular putting in an outstanding shift.

The relentlessly direct winger capped off a superb display with a brace, yet he was far from Bournemouth’s only threat, with their attack looking remarkably well-oiled at this early stage in the season.

All in all, Iraola’s men generated an impressive 1.56xG from open play, almost matching the reigning champions, who mustered a comparable 1.73xG.

🟠 Early Warning Signs At Molineaux

Coming up against similarly top-tier opposition, Wolves failed to impress as they slumped to a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of a rampant Man City.

They struggled to cope with City’s relentless midfield energy, finding themselves repeatedly carved open as Guardiola’s men shifted through the gears.

Going forward, they created very little, totalling 0.54xG, with their best chance of the match coming from a nicely worked free-kick. That said, there were glimmers of hope for Wolves, particularly towards the start of the second half, although they completely capitulated after Haaland bagged his second.

With some already touting them as early relegation candidates, it looks like Vitor Pereira might have his work cut out for him this season, as he aims to steady the ship.

📊 Bournemouth v Wolves H2H

Meetings between Bournemouth and Wolves have been far from predictable in recent years, with both sides recording two wins, two losses, and a draw across their last five encounters.

Bournemouth have comfortably had the upper hand in their last four games, but poor finishing, accompanied by xGa underperformances, have kept results from matching their dominance.

Interestingly, the away team has tended to fare better in this fixture, with Bournemouth still searching for their first-ever Premier League victory over Wolves at the Vitality Stadium after five attempts.

If there’s one constant when these two clash, it’s drama. Four of the last five meetings have seen a red card brandished (three to Bournemouth and one to Wolves); meanwhile, the outlier made history as Justin Kluivert became the first-ever player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a single Premier League game.
