Sean Dyche’s Forest are in the middle of a relegation battle, and whilst they are still strong favourites to progress here, Dyche will know the potential banana skin that they are faced with.

📂 Wrexham v Nottingham Forest Cheat Sheet
📈 Wrexham v Nottingham Forest Form & Stats
Wrexham had an amazing festive period, winning four out of four between Boxing Day and January 4th, and to be totally fair, the wins were well deserved. Wrexham kicked their run off with a dramatic 5-3 home win over Sheffield United, controlled a 2-1 home win against Preston, and then travelled to Blackburn with a rotated team and held Rovers at arm’s length, saving their arguably most impressive win at Bristol City for last.
The Dragons haven’t lost at home in seven matches, winning five of those as well. Indeed, they have only lost once in 12 home matches, and they are carrying a +0.23xG differential in their home matches this season. This isn’t a huge gap, especially when considering that their opposition here are a Premier League side, but they have been consistent in getting results. It is their defence that could do with an improvement, conceding an average of 1.4xG per match is a concern heading into this game.
Nottingham Forest had a huge win on Tuesday night which will give them a spring in their step. Morgan Gibbs-White's dramatic late penalty at West Ham to win the match has given Forest significant breathing space in the battle to stay in the top flight. It had been four Premier League defeats in a row for Forest prior to that win.
There is a case to be made that Forest are lower than they should be in the table. Though the Premier League is obviously very competitive, and the gaps between the teams in mid-table are very small, Forest actually show up well in the performance data. They are 13th overall for xG for and 12th for xG against, 12th for shots on target and 12th for xG difference as well, so there is a clear pattern there.
📔 Wrexham v Nottingham Forest Formation & Team News
Phil Parkinson deserves great credit for the way he has allowed his team to take shape during the season. They had a huge turnover of players in the summer, but the long-time boss has used his experience to allow the players to settle in and eventually come to put them in a system that suits his best personnel.
They have stuck to the three-man defence that has served them well in recent seasons, but there has been some adaptation going forwards, with Nathan Broadhead and Josh Windass trusted to retain the balance in a 3-4-2-1 shape. If they are rotated then Lewis O’Brien and Ollie Rathbone could fill those places as they did at Blackburn, which would necessitate a slightly different gameplan, but that could be suitable for this tie.
Forest are likely to stick to a 4-2-3-1 formation, but there could be some rotation of the usual Premier League XI. They played on Tuesday night so their turnaround time is much shorter than Wrexham’s and that will likely have an impact on who Dyche chooses as starters for this match.
We expect the likes of James McAtee and Dilane Bakwa to start here, but I doubt that Dyche will go without the likes of Nikola Milenkovic, Murillo, Neco Williams, Elliot Anderson, Morgan Gibbs-White, or Igor Jesus, who have been his trusted starters since he took over.
