Portugal are obviously enormous favourites to win Group F, having cruised through qualifying, a position which would ensure they would face no group winners until at least the semi-finals. A deep tournament run opens up options in the golden boot and player of the tournament markets, and you can explore these further with our Players to Watch Out For article.
Portugal absolutely cruised through qualification, becoming one of the first three sides to book their place at this tournament all the way back in October last year.
They were the only side with a perfect 100% win record across all their group phase games, and rank first for goals (36), goals per game (3.60), and goals conceded (2).
Record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo unsurprisingly top scored again, with 10 goals, but there is some debate within Portugal over whether or not the al-Nassr man should start over PSG starlet Goncalo Ramos. Should Ronaldo continue to start, as he has throughout qualifying so far, he may be a solid bet for the golden boot at 13.0, especially with three games against relatively weak opposition in Turkey, Georgia and Czechia to begin the tournament.
This is something of a golden generation for Portugal, but so far they have struggled to make a real impression on the latter stages of a tournament, falling in the round of 16 at Euro 2020 and slumping to a shock exit against Morocco in the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar.
New manager Roberto Martinez is hoping to change all that, but whether or not he can do so remains to be seen, having failed to get Belgium’s golden generation over the line throughout his six-year stint in charge.
Their run to the semi-finals looks very kind however, with a third-placed side awaiting the winners of Group F and then the runners-up of Group D or E awaiting in the quarter-finals. A semi-final matchup would see Germany, Spain or Italy as the most likely opponents, all of which Portugal will feel are beatable.
They look a great price at 2.50 to reach the semi-finals, and an even better one at 4.33 to reach the final or 9.0 to win the tournament outright. Unless they have another 90 minutes of madness as they did in Qatar against Morocco, a combination of a great squad and a very friendly draw means we should expect Portugal to be one of the last teams standing this summer.
