Hibs host Hearts at Easter Road in the 3rd Edinburgh derby of the season, with the teams having both enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks.

When the sides last met on Boxing Day, they were propping up the table. A couple of months later, both are looking good to finish in the top 6, having enjoyed some excellent form.

David Gray’s home side hold the bragging rights in this fixture so far this season, following a 1-1 draw last time out in Leith and then a 2-1 victory at Tynecastle.

With Hibs, who lack an outstanding goal threat like their opponents, having kept only 6 league clean sheets in 28 games, he should fancy his chances of another goal.

💻 Hibernian v Hearts Form and Tactics

Hibs are starting to look like the real deal under David Gray, having pieced together an astonishing 14-match undefeated run that has seen them win on 10 occasions. Given they won only once in their first 14 Premiership games, the turnaround has been incredible.

The most eye-catching of these victories undoubtedly came against Celtic at home last weekend as they claimed a 2-1 win as the champions elect were caught with a hangover from their Champions League exit.

But the Hibees have been performing well on their own merits and are undefeated at Easter Road since losing 2-1 to St Mirren back in November. They were 3-1 winners over Dundee United in midweek.

As well as stopping the silly individual errors that plagued them early in the campaign, getting away high-quality shots has been a key area in their success. They boast 47.52 xG this season – the 3rd-highest figure in the Premiership, and though their shot count of 345 is relatively unspectacular, they post 0.14 xG per shot, 2nd only to Celtic (0.15).

Nectarios Triantis has quietly emerged as a man in form, with a goal or an assist in 8 of his last 11 Premiership games. He had none in his first 19 appearances of the campaign.

While Hibs have a balanced approach to playing down the flanks, they are clearly most dangerous on the left via Nicky Cadden. He has 5 goals and 4 assists for the season, putting him 2nd behind only Martin Boyle in terms of decisive actions in the Premier League for his side. Australia international Boyle, though, has only 1 assist to his name in his last 5.

Hearts have been on a prolonged run of strong form that has seen them move into the top 6 for the first time since the opening day of the season. The Jambos have won 8 of their last 10 matches (including 1 on penalties), coming from behind to beat St Mirren 3-1 in midweek.

Neil Critchley has lately asked his side to play in a midfield diamond, with Beni Baningime at the base and Lawrence Shankland at the point, and this system has worked effectively for them. The familiar issues in terms of a lack of pace in the side and an occasionally sloppy defence are still evident, but the toothlessness that characterised their play earlier this season has gone.

Indeed, they post the highest possession figure (53.8%) outside the Old Firm clubs as well as the highest shots per game (13.1) and shots on target per game (4.4), when Rangers and Celtic are not considered.

Hearts have scored 2 or more goals in 4 of their last 5 league matches. 1 of the big reasons for this has been the arrival of Elton Kabangu, who has scored 5 times in his 5 Premiership starts. Finally they have found a solution to Shankland’s uncharacteristically poor campaign.

Frankie Kent, Craig Halkett and Stephen Kingsley are all missing from a defence that has kept only 1 clean sheet in their last 5 matches. While Jamie McCart was extremely combative against St Mirren in midweek, winning 12 aerial duels, this is an area of concern.
