Tamworth v Tottenham
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 12th January at 12:30
🏆
Competition: FA Cup
We have a true FA Cup Third Round tie on our hands on Sunday lunchtime as Tamworth of the National League take on Premier League Tottenham Hotspur.
The Lambs are currently 16th in the National League, almost equidistant in terms of points between the relegation zone and the final play-off position. Spurs are 12th in the Premier League, struggling with injuries, but come into this one on the back of a big win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Semi-Final first leg.
⭐ Tamworth v Tottenham Best Bets
This is a tricky game to get a handle on, mostly because of the likely Tottenham team news. As mentioned above, they’re coming into this game following a cup semi-final, and then play fierce rivals Arsenal next midweek, so there seems sure to be some heavy of rotation of their key players. The problem is that most of their regular players at the moment are the ones who have come in to relieve the first-team stars.
They’re without their first-choice goalkeeper, centre-backs and left-back, and you would therefore think Ange Postecoglu would want to preserve the likes of Pedro Porro, Archie Gray, Radu Dragusin and Djed Spence.
The only players who can come into replace them are youth team players, who may not be up to the physical battle likely to be posed by Tamworth, who like to get the ball in the box as regularly, and even possess a mammoth long throw via Tom Tonks, who will hoist the ball into the Spurs area from anywhere inside their half.
This is a bit of a flyer with the onus on seeing plenty of lesser-known youngsters in the Spurs line-up, but we think is worth chancing at the odds. Even with the current regular back four, you wouldn’t be that confident of them defending balls into their box.
🟢 Tamworth v Tottenham #WhatOddsPaddy Tip
We’ve already given our thoughts on Timo Werner’s chance of scoring, which you can read above.
In terms of Tottenham winning each half, it doesn’t seem too much of a reach given we have a Premier League side facing up against a mid-table National League side. There is a chance that Tottenham include enough first-team players for this game to be a bit of a walkover. Spurs do not struggle to score goals, with the 2nd highest Premier League tally of 42 from 20 games.
Even if we fancy Tamworth to score a couple of goals, Spurs have the firepower to make that a non-issue in terms of winning both halves.
👕 Tamworth v Tottenham Predicted XI
🔍 Tamworth v Tottenham Players to Watch
🔴 George Morrison
Having a look through the player prices, Tamworth players are very short in pretty much all areas. The market doesn’t seem to have much confidence in Spurs. We do think however that midfielder George Morrison is overpriced to be shown a card. He has picked up 6 cards in the National League this season, at a rate of 0.34 per 90.
Most of Spurs card drawers operate through the middle of the pitch in James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall. Not all of them will play, but if just one does you would fancy Morrison to try and get to grips with them.
⚪ Timo Werner
German international Werner has a point to prove after recently being publicly called out by his manager for performing poorly.
We’re pretty sure he will be starting this one in the absence of other options. For 7 consecutive seasons between 2016 and 2023, Werner posted double-figure goals seasons. This is the kind of opposition Werner can thrive against, where his pure speed will surely see him get numerous opportunities to score. He should play a good chunk of the minutes here providing all is going well for Spurs, and he’s a good price to benefit against a lesser defence.

💻 Tamworth v Tottenham Form and Tactics
Tamworth usually operate with a 4-4-1-1 formation. They’re a direct side who look to get the ball into the final third as quickly as possible. Set pieces will be a big part of their attacking armoury here, with Tom Tonks’ long throw a vital weapon if he starts. They will hope that their 3G pitch can be a leveller.
They’re not in great form, with just 1 win in 8 in all competitions, but will surely be up for what will be a career highlight for most of these players.
Spurs only have one way of playing, with a heavy focus on attack. Their games can often descend into basketball matches, with the ball quickly shifting from one end of the pitch to the other. In December they had a run of 4 domestic matches, which resulted in a huge 28 goals.
Their recent form is probably not that relevant to this game given the rotation expected, but they recorded a very impressive win over league leaders Liverpool in the week and kept a much-needed clean sheet in the process.
