Club Burgge to Win (v Cercle Brugge)
🏆
Competition: Belgian Pro League
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 26th May at 17:30
Although a draw would suffice for Club Brugge to confirm the league title, they would love to end the campaign with a bang against their city rivals and secure all three points. Given their current run of form, which has seen Nicky Hayen’s side go nine league games unbeaten, including seven victories, they are best placed to get maximum points. Sunday’s away team may already have an eye on their upcoming European competition play-off against Genk, which determines who will qualify for European football next season.
With that being the case, it does mean this match essentially means more for Club Brugge compared to Cercle Brugge. For all that there is the local derby element to consider, the hosts are the stronger team and their opponents do ultimately have a much more important game still to come. Even so, Miron Muslic’s outfit have lost three of their previous six in league action, including against top-three duo Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht.
The overriding differences between the two teams is that Hayen’s men have a 15-goal stronger xGA figure in comparison, whereas Cercle have underperformed their xG by around 13 goals, meaning the soon-to-be-confirmed champions are much more reliable.
Lazio to Win (v Sassuolo)
🏆
Competition: Serie A
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 26th May at 19:45
Lazio have already achieved their objective of qualifying for European football next season prior to this final day encounter, but the strong expectation is they’ll conclude their campaign with a sixth home win in succession in all competitions. This is because they’re coming up against a Sassuolo outfit that will be plying their trade in Serie B in 2024-25 after relegation was confirmed following their last match. Therefore, this is a game they could be doing without.
The visitors have recorded just two league victories in 2024 and have collected a measly nine away league points all season. They’ve collected those points in five games, meaning they’ve lost 13 of 18 Serie A battles on their travels, plus they’ve failed to score in four of six when taking on top-six opponents on the road. On the other side, they take on Igor Tudor’s side on Sunday, a team that have won all bar one of their season home meetings against the bottom-eight.
There isn’t a great deal separating the two teams in terms of scoring goals, however, the defensive numbers prove a stark gulf in class. Heading into the weekend, just four clubs have shipped fewer goals than Lazio, whereas their relegated opponents have conceded 36 goals more in comparison, with only rock-bottom Salernitana allowing more.
