2026 Grand National Preview
Last year's Grand National fourth Iroko was an obvious starting point for this race, but a disappointing Cheltenham Festival run has shifted attention towards stablemate Jagwar. Also owned by JP McManus, Jagwar won over two miles and four furlongs earlier in the season before connections stepped him up significantly in trip for the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham.
He finished second, making some jumping errors, but staying on strongly in the closing stages - form that reads well for a marathon test. That run earned him a five-pound rise in the ratings, though as the National weights were announced before Cheltenham, he enters the race five pounds ahead of the handicapper. His jumping remains the key question, though the modified National fences may help.
Last year's winner Nick Rockett is the obvious rival. Willie Mullins' stayer won by two and a half lengths from I Am Maximus and returns off just a four-pound higher mark. A reappearance run at Down Royal over three miles and two furlongs suggested he has been specifically prepared for this race.
Gorgeous Tom is the long-shot each-way option - the eight-year-old has shown ability over staying trips, finishing fourth in a Grade Three Handicap Chase at Newbury in November. Trainer Henry De Bromhead won the National in 2021 with Minella Times.
