Sporting v Arsenal Match Preview
Sporting's journey to this stage has been one of the stories of this season's Champions League. Many expected them to fall in the league phase, but they secured a top-eight finish before producing a remarkable comeback against Bodo/Glimt in the round of 16, overturning a three-goal deficit to reach the quarter-finals. It is the first time Sporting have reached this stage since the 1980s, when the competition was still known as the European Cup. Despite that inexperience at this level, Rúben Amorim's former side have won all five of their home Champions League matches this season, which gives them a real platform to take something into the second leg.
Arsenal arrive under mounting pressure. FA Cup elimination at the weekend drew widespread criticism and left the Gunners fighting on just two fronts. Their history in the Champions League at this stage does little to ease concern, having lost five of their last eight quarter-final ties in the competition, though they did break that pattern against Real Madrid last season. Being installed as favourites to win the competition this year only adds to the weight of expectation.
Sporting are likely to set up in a 4-2-3-1, with Luis Suárez and Francisco Trincão as the primary attacking threats. The two have combined for 14 goal contributions in this season's Champions League - a notable return given that Liga Portugal can sometimes flatter domestic statistics. Goncalo Inácio's side will be without Geovany Quenda, who has battled injuries throughout the season ahead of his summer move to Chelsea.
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal will also line up in a 4-2-3-1, building from the back with three players as the base. Martín Zubimendi typically drops between the centre backs to allow both full backs to advance, while Declan Rice pushes into more advanced areas. Piero Hincapié, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino are confirmed long-term absentees, though Arteta is expected to have his key players available.
How To Get Your Free Bets from Sporting v Arsenal
This expert bet builder is the perfect qualifying bet - place it to unlock your free bets, win or lose.
Martin Zubimendi 1+ fouls committed
Zubimendi has been reliable this season and should be fresh after limited recent minutes. He averages nearly one foul per game domestically but steps it up in Europe (2.25 per 90).
Viktor Gyokeres 1+ shots on target
Gyokeres is in strong form, scoring 10 goals since January and netting for both club and country recently. His Champions League numbers stand out, averaging 1.78 shots on target per 90.
Bukayo Saka 2+ fouls won
Saka’s dribbling consistently draws fouls, averaging 2.29 per 90 in the Premier League. His lower Champions League numbers look like an anomaly. Against an attacking fullback, he’ll see plenty of duels.
Over 0.5 Sporting goals
Sporting have scored in 42 of their last 43 matches, including against elite opposition. Arsenal’s defence has dipped, with just three clean sheets in their last 10 games.
