📈 Tottenham v Liverpool Form & Tactics
I wouldn’t have been surprised to see a club statement after Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out, with that result leaving Tottenham 11th in the league table. Thomas Frank still leads the betting market as the next Premier League manager to be sacked, but the rumblings inside Tottenham suggest that he’s still got the internal backing of the club for now.
That 3-0 defeat wasn’t a harsh scoreline either, Forest dominated the game and created an xG of 2.32 - all while limiting Tottenham to just six shots and a measly xG of 0.33. This is my biggest concern when watching Tottenham, their attacking structure is that of a midtable side, with Frank continually leaving them unbalanced. Tottenham are missing creative players, but the solutions that Frank has come up with are not good enough for where Tottenham want to be.
In fairness to Frank, this is a side that finished just outside the relegation spots last season, so there was always going to be work to do to make them a competitive force in the Premier League. The worry for Frank is that kind of capitulation at the Forest Ground last week, is usually the beginning of the end for a manager, with Frank already having a few public rifts with players in the squad.
Liverpool come into this clash having won their last two matches, against Brighton and Inter Milan - crucially keeping a clean sheet in both of these games. They limited Brighton and Inter Milan to just three shots on target across these matches - suggesting that Arne Slot has come up with a temporary solution to stop the issues that Liverpool have been facing at the back.
These sides always seem to have entertaining encounters, with 26 goals across the five meetings that have taken place over the last year. Ange was in charge for most of those games, and Frank will be aware of the thrashings that Tottenham have had against the Reds - so it wouldn’t surprise me to see a more pragmatic approach from Spurs, which probably won’t go down well with the fans.
📔 Tottenham v Liverpool Formation & Team News
Tottenham have a good defensive structure, but other than that, there really aren’t many standout qualities of this side. Their attacking patterns and output in the final third reflect their league standing, with Tottenham only scoring 10 goals across their eight home games this term.
Tottenham saw an average of 3.68 goals per game at home last season, they only won six of these games - but Ange scratched an itch that many Tottenham fans have which is a desire to be entertained. That goal average at home currently sits at 2.3 per game, suggesting that Frank isn’t delivering on either the results front - or the entertainment side of the game.
Tottenham are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1 and I’d keep an eye on Pedro Porro. He’s created 18 chances this season (1.31 per 90), but his defensive metrics are really poor. He’s getting dribbled past 1.31 times per 90, and is only winning 3.92 duels per game, which is a low number for a right-back.
It’s not clear who lines up against him for Liverpool, but he is the obvious weakness in the Tottenham backline, so expect Arne Slot to target Spurs down his side - as many teams have done this season. Porro was booked and torn apart by Callum Hudson-Odoi last time out, with the winger on Porro’s side of the pitch having a hand in all three goals for Forest.
Liverpool have definitely changed their structure in recent matches and a lot of credit has to go to Curtis Jones for restoring a bit of order in the middle of the park. Jones has started and played the entire 90 minutes across the last three matches. His presence in the side allows Liverpool to be calmer on the ball, and also offer more protection to van Dijk and Konate, who were being exposed too often by long balls.
My only concern with this shape for Liverpool is a lack of speed in the frontline, with only Ekitike being a player that would be willing to run in behind. That being said, Liverpool do have that quality on the bench through the likes of Chiesa and Ngumoha to inject a bit of pace into the match, if their new structure isn’t working effectively.
