Both AEK Athens and Aberdeen will be looking to bounce back from their matchday one defeats in the Europa Conference League when they face off at the OPAP Arena on Thursday evening.

The Greek hosts came away empty-handed from their opening league phase assignment when slumping to a surprise 3-1 loss away at NK Celje.

As for Aberdeen, they put up a spirited display, but were ultimately outclassed when being edged out 3-2 by Shakhtar Donetsk at Pittodrie.

AEK Athens to Win

I think AEK Athens will prove too strong for Aberdeen on Thursday evening. Marko Nikolic’s side have done the majority of their best work at home this season, winning three of their four Greek Super League matches at their capital headquarters this term.

What’s more, the Yellow-Blacks also took top honours from each of their three Europa Conference League qualifiers at home, defeating Hapoel Beer-Sheva, Aris Limassol and Anderlecht. Those three teams are all regulars on the European circuit, whereas the same can’t be said for an Aberdeen side that were soundly beaten by FCSB away from home in the second leg of their Europa League play-off tie.

Over 2.5 Goals

Aberdeen’s European games have been fairly entertaining affairs this season, with each of their three continental contests all featuring over 2.5 goals.

As mentioned, AEK Athens were also involved in a goal-heavy game when crashing to a 3-1 defeat in Slovenia on matchday one.

With both teams desperate to get off the mark, I think there is plenty of scope for this encounter to deliver a minimum of three match strikes.

Aberdeen have restored some confidence with back-to-back victories in the Scottish Premiership, so they could land a blow in Athens, even in defeat.

📈 AEK Athens v Aberdeen Form & Stats

AEK Athens suffered their first league defeat of the season when going down 2-0 at home to Greek Super League leaders PAOK on Sunday. After kicking off their domestic campaign with four clean sheets from their opening five matches of the season, the Yellow-Blacks’ backline has been breached four times across their last two league games.

The hosts have been shown a red card in each of their last two league games, while they also had a player sent off during the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off tie with Anderlecht earlier this season. It’s also worth noting that AEK’s matchday one encounter with NK Celje featured seven yellow cards.

AEK Athens have been relatively strong corner performers in this season’s Greek Super League, averaging 5.43 flag kicks per game.

Aberdeen finally appear to be moving in the right direction following a difficult start to the season. After picking up just one point from their opening six Scottish Premiership games of the campaign, Jimmy Thelin’s team have hauled themselves off bottom spot thanks to back-to-back wins over Dundee and St Mirren.

The fact the Dons’ defence managed to keep a clean sheet in each of those two victories will also please manager Thelin.

Like AEK Athens, ill discipline has cost Aberdeen at times this season. The Dons have been shown a red card in two of their last nine matches while their opponents had a man dismissed last time out.

Jesper Karlsson has been a standout performer for Aberdeen since joining the club on loan from Bologna on deadline day. The Swedish winger has hit 3 goals across his last three appearances for the Pittodrie club.
