Bruno Fernandes to Score Anytime

Bruno Fernandes is usually on fire in the qualifying campaigns for these major tournaments.

He provided 13 goal contributions (6 goals, 7 assists) across his 10 appearances as part of the qualifying campaign for the European Championships and has netted 25 goals across his 80 caps for Portugal.

Fernandes has already scored his first Premier League goal of the season which came from the penalty spot against Burnley last time out, and can take that momentum into the international break.

Over 3.5 Goals

Portugal scored 36 goals across their 10 qualifying games for the European Championships (3.6 per game) which is a record that suggests that we will see plenty of goals in their games against Ireland, Hungary and Armenia as they attempt to qualify for the World Cup next summer.

Armenia’s last three matches across all competitions have seen over 3.5 goals. They lost 6-1 to Georgia and received a similar battering by Kosovo (5-2) before contesting a 2-2 draw against Montenegro. Portugal’s goalscoring prowess could mean that they cover this line by themselves with the vast array of talent they have within the squad.

Armenia have shown that they could also provide a small threat which can help to up the goal count here. This will be particularly noticeable if Portugal get complacent after establishing a commanding lead

🟠 Free Hit for Armenia

Armenia finished second in their Nations League C group which also contained North Macedonia, Faroe Islands and Latvia  - a far cry from the quality of opposition that Portugal have been facing in recent months. They won two of their six games in this group, scoring eight goals and conceding nine.

They did manage to set up a clash against Georgia to potentially qualify for the higher level of the Nations League, but were demolished in that game, losing 6-1 on the night which shows how far Armenia are away from matching the quality of this Portugal side.

Armenia rank 105th in the FIFA World Rankings making them the lowest ranked side in Group F. They won’t expect too much from their two games against Portugal who are heavy favourites to top the group and should instead target their home games against Hungary and Ireland.

🔴 Portugal Thrive in Qualifying Matches

The jury is still out on Roberto Martinez and this Portugal side.

They beat Spain to lift the Nations League trophy earlier in the year which, if Spain’s success in the competition before the EUROs is anything to go by, is a very good omen for their chances of winning the World Cup next year.

Portugal’s issue has never been an absence of talent, only France can really match the squad when it comes to quality and depth all over the park.

Martinez has occasionally had issues with getting the right blend of players on the pitch, he seems a bit overly conservative to me - as most managers on the international scene are in fairness.

Martinez should have no issues in letting his side play on the front foot here with such a stark disparity in quality between these sides. However, I’m still a bit unsure of his negative approach against some of the better nations.

📊 Armenia v Portugal H2H

The most recent head to head meeting between the sides was back in 2015 with Portugal running out 3-2 winners on that occasion.
