There is just one more game for these sides to play in Group D of the World Cup qualifiers, and little to play for.

As it stands, Azerbaijan can only finish bottom of the group following their result against Iceland, while France secured top spot by beating Ukraine last time out.

After losing 5-0 against Iceland in round one of the World Cup qualifying campaign, it was always going to be a tough group for European minnows Azerbaijan. While they did manage to secure a point against Ukraine in their proceeding game, back-to-back defeats in the October international break put them out of contention to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

France have been at the complete other end of the spectrum, coming into this match unscathed from their previous fixtures, with top spot already secured. Didier Deschamps’ side have been measured and controlled in their approach, but with little to play for, we could see the handbrake released for both sides, aiming to provide the crowd with some entertainment.

Azerbaijan have scored in two of their three home outings in the group stages so far, and will want to get on the scoresheet at least on Sunday night, but the real test for them will be keeping this star-studded France attack at bay.

France to have 8+ Shots on Target

When these sides met in October, Les Bleus cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Azerbaijan, as Florian Thauvin, Adrien Rabiot and Kylian Mbappe were all on the scoresheet. The hosts racked up 33 shots at the Parc des Princes, which amounted to 3.23 xG.

France managed nine shots on target, while they also struck the woodwork - the scoreline didn’t do them much justice. Azerbaijan struggled to progress out of their own half, and they managed just the one shot off target.

While Azerbaijan will have the advantage of contesting this match on home turf, it is unlikely that much changes - they have failed to win eight home games on the bounce, with their last victory coming against Kazakhstan in a friendly back in June 2024.

There is a notable disparity in quality between these two sides, and France will look to press home their advantage and finish off the group stages undefeated.

📈 Azerbaijan v France Form & Stats

France looked in top form against Ukraine last time out, as they cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win at the Parc des Princes to confirm their World Cup spot. Kylian Mbappe extended his excellent goal-scoring start to the season by securing another brace, while Michael Olise also chipped in with a goal.

Hugo Ekitike has been in good form for Liverpool this season, and was able to get on the scoresheet, despite only featuring from the bench. With first-place already secured, Deschamps could opt for a bit of rotation for this match, but regardless of who he plays, France will expect to create chances.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan have failed to win any of their last 15 matches in competitions, in a turgid run stretching back to September 2024. They were dealt a 2-0 loss on home turf against Iceland on Thursday night, meaning they have just one point from their five group games so far.

Prior to the World Cup qualifiers, in the Nations League, Azerbaijan finished rock bottom of their group alongside Slovakia, Estonia and Sweden, taking just one point from their six games. Facing an in-form France side on Sunday night will be a daunting task for these European minnows.
