NORTHERN TICKER must be high on everyone’s radar for this Saturday’s Ayr Gold Cup, following a gutsy success in a strong York handicap over 6f. The unexposed three-year-old sprinter has a handy 2lb advantage over any four-year-old or older horses here and arrives in peak form.

He could continue his progression, at a track expected to firmly suit, which suits strong-travelling types, such as Northern Ticker. Any rain would also suit, having shown winning form on soft ground as a juvenile. The Mehmas gelding deserves to be towards the top of the market and should be feared by all.

Strike Red E/W @ 15.00

I must admit I have a soft spot for STRIKE RED, who just never gives up, in whatever race scenario he finds himself in.

Four of his eight career wins have come on ground with ‘soft’ somewhere in the going description, and there seems to be plenty of rain anticipated. He ran better than his finishing position suggested last time at York and has dropped to a winning mark of 95 - when successful in a strong Curragh handicap in 2023.

He stays this 6f well and ought to be finishing strongly. His downfield effort in last season’s renewal can be excused when poorly drawn. I give him each-way claims at attractive odds.

Commanche Falls to Win

Northern Ticker’s stablemate and yard favourite COMMANCHE FALLS finished behind the aforementioned at York two starts ago. That was a big return to form and he appears to be peaking at the right time.

He now has a pull in the weights, which theoretically gives him the advantage to reverse that form. He is also now an extremely well-handicapped horse – he is 5lb below his last winning handicap mark and 9lb lower than when sixth in this race last term.

I seriously rate his each-way chances and feel the bookmakers have underestimated his claims, even despite this being an ultra-competitive race as ever.
