Yes, we’ve already covered the best players to select in FPL but due to only having a £100m budget available to us, inevitably we have to select cheaper options; we just can’t have them all. When building your winning FPL team, you require a balanced squad containing the top players within each specific price bracket as much as possible.
With Erling Haaland (£15m) becoming the most expensive player in FPL history, we must save money somewhere. Here are the best options in detail, to help you determine where the cutbacks will be made in your team. You can also follow our Fantasy Premier League Football Tips throughout the season for gameweekly insights and opinions.
The new season is now just over a week away, and our experts are already rolling out the first of their Premier League predictions, so now is the perfect time to get involved.
Our Premier League accumulator tips will be available every week throughout the 2024/25 season, while we will remain across all the action on the continent, the EFL and in Scotland in our various football betting tips & predictions, with fresh tips available here on Andy’s Bet Club every day.
⚔️ £4m Defender Tips
🇦🇷 Valentin Barco – Brighton (£4m, 12.2%)
Wouldn’t it be great to spend £4m on a premium defender, instead of £6m or even £7m? Well, look no further than Brighton’s new left back. After attracting much attention while playing at the U20 World Cup, the young Argentinian showcased his multitude of skills.
He has played multiple positions including left back, left midfield and even central midfield. His precision from crosses is a thing of beauty and combining these two strengths alone increases the likelihood of goal involvements within the side resulting in plenty of points for low cost.
Alternative Picks
If you want to save even more money and include another £4m defender, Wout Faes at Leicester (8.9%) is a solid option.
As my best players to select and avoid article has already highlighted, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7m, 22.1%) is the cheapest he has been in many seasons and with the potential to score big week in, week out, he must be considered. Tottenham’s Pedro Porro (£5.5m, 28.5%) is another attacking defender, as is Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson (£6m, 5.8%).
If you can’t quite reach Alexander-Arnold, Marc Guehi (£4.5m, 9.3%) is always a solid option and could potentially be on his way to a better defensive unit, should he transfer to Newcastle United, so keep on the lookout.
Top Tip – Consider your formation before choosing your players. You can have a £4m defender you don’t plan on playing to save funds, but ensure your bench isn’t too weak – you will require it when you least expect it.
⛹ £6.5m-£8.5m Midfielder Tips
🇫🇷 Christopher Nkunku – Chelsea (£6.5m, 17.8%)
The mid-price midfielder bracket every single season represents the best value by a large margin. Each season, a player emerges that the game seems to underprice and before long is in the majority of our teams. This season, that player is Blues’ attacking midfielder, Christopher Nkunku.
Due to being injured most of last season, he has been underpriced in most FPL managers’ view but his potential points output, could and should be high. After a tough opening fixture at home to Man City, Chelsea play Wolves, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest in the next set of fixtures and with Nkunku registering three goals in five pre-season games, he always has a hand in goal involvements. The only downside is his injury, but now he looks fighting fit and back to his best.
Alternative Picks
Anthony Gordon (£7.5m, 33.5%) is a great pick after his breakout season last year, registering 11 goals and 17 assists resulting in 183 points; and with two great opening fixtures. Though playing in a currently volatile Man United side, the Portuguese magician Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m, 13.9%) is a great pick. He is always involved in goals scored within the team, is the designated penalty taker and is constantly on set-pieces; he screams consistent points. Slightly cheaper options are Eberechi Eze (£7m, 32.9%) and Jarrod Bowen (£7.5m, 7.4%), you can still expect a good return of points from both of them.
Top Tip – With this being the best value-for-money position, you want to have a brilliant midfield selection to rotate and try to find that emerging cheap asset early doors – before the majority do.
⚽️ £7m-£9m Forward Tips
🏴 Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa (£9m, 49.7%)
Let’s be honest, since most managers will already have booked in Erling Haaland, it comes down to the remaining two spots. I recommend having another fairly priced premium asset (£7m – £9m) and a super cheap option (£4.5m), normally from a promoted side or a player that struggles for minutes on the pitch. Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins was last season’s highest points scorer, even above Haaland, so remains a great pick here if you can afford to fit him in.
Alternative Picks
The best alternative premium option comes in the form of Alexander Isak (£8.5m, 55.3%), who bagged 21 goals and four assists in 27 appearances for Newcastle last season. Only injuries prevented the Sweden international from mixing it with Haaland and Watkins for FPL top point scorer honours in the end, and he could have a big year if Newcastle can recapture their form of two seasons ago.
Elsewhere, Rodrigo Muniz (£6m, 7.5%) finished last season with a great run of goalscoring form, while a super cheap option has emerged in the form of Ross Stewart (£4.5, 1.8%), as he is set to get substantial minutes for Southampton this season.
Top Tip – Start with Haaland. If you go without and want to transfer him in, his huge price tag requires managers to make at least two transfers in order to fit him in.
