Blackburn remain without a home win so far this season following a defeat to Swansea in midweek, whilst Stoke are holding onto their position in the top six through excellent defensive work. The pressure is beginning to build on Valerien Ismael with the home crowd simultaneously thinning out in number and also growing vociferous in displeasure of the club’s direction.

Stoke Double Chance

I am starting to get concerned about Blackburn. With all of the noise off the field, they do not strike me as a club who are well set for a relegation battle. Those sorts of battles usually require some sense of togetherness and all stakeholders pulling in the same direction to get out of them, this will not be the case at Rovers.

At the moment, Stoke’s form is much more impressive than Rovers’. The Championship is seeing a lot of draws so far this season, so getting that result on our side is a prudent strategy, but when it comes to which side to lean towards for the win bet, we have to go to the away side.

Stoke have avoided defeat in six of their eight Championship matches so far, including away matches at Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday, and earlier this week a draw at Middlesbrough in which Stoke won the xG battle handily and restricted Boro to 0.64 xG and no big chances at all.

Rovers lost 1-2 at home to Swansea in the week with very few players looking on the top of their game. If Todd Cantwell isn’t firing, although he did score the opener on Tuesday, then Rovers look devoid of ideas going forwards. They have conceded twice in every completed home game so far this season, and combining this with being 19th for xG created, and 20th for shots on target, in the league this season, there are real concerns about Valerien Ismael’s team.

📈 Blackburn v Stoke Form & Stats

Blackburn have potentially been hard done by with their match postponement against Ipswich. The fact that they were 1-0 up against 10 men with 15 minutes to go makes it likely that they should have three more points and an important home win against a big team in their record.

Without that result though, the match will be replayed, Blackburn sit in the relegation zone. They have won twice, both away from home, and lost the other five matches. The last two defeats have been especially concerning, a humbling 0-3 at Charlton where they barely laid a glove on the Addicks, and failing to hold onto a 1-0 lead at home to Swansea.

We know that Blackburn have been short of quality going forwards, but they actually top the league for accurate crosses per match (6) but, also, they are only 20th for touches in the opposition box. Another metric Rovers lead the league on is tackles per match (21.1) but this comes hand-in-hand with fouls per match, for which they are second with 13.6 per match.

Stoke look to be holding on a little bit in their form. They haven’t scored more than once since a 2-1 win at Southampton on August 23rd. They did generate 1.6 xG at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday though, so chance creation isn’t the main issue. They have also remained pretty tight defensively, conceding only six goals so far.

Their defensive record is the best in the league alongside Middlesbrough, and they are also third for shots on target (4.4 per match) and fourth for big chances created (19 in total).
