Coventry moved into the automatic promotion places after another convincing win in midweek. Indeed, the 4-0 win at Millwall is probably the most convincing case yet that Coventry could be ready to mount a serious promotion challenge.

Sheffield Wednesday have the odds stacked against them this season, but they are making a great fist of getting results given their difficulties.

Sheffield Wednesday v Coventry

Championship

12:30

Coventry to Win & Over 1.5 Total Goals

I have been confident in my stance on Coventry since pre-season. Whilst all and sundry in the Championship were going out buying whole new squads of players, and often for new managers, Coventry were only adding one or two players to a squad which had been good enough to rise into 5th place for Frank Lampard by the end of last season.

Their last starting XI against Millwall on Wednesday, saw only one player start that wasn’t with the club last season, Carl Rushworth in goal. Yet, the way that Coventry have started the season, one might expect there to be something different about them.

The data is convincing. Coventry have the highest xG generated in the competition, and the least amount of xG conceded. They also have the highest number of shots on target and have created the highest number of big chances. All of this has manifested itself in 22 goals in eight matches, whilst only conceding seven, and none at all conceded in the last three matches.

Sheffield Wednesday scored their first home goal of the season in their 1-1 draw with QPR last weekend, but they lost the xG in that match quite heavily as well. Previous home matches in the Championship have ended 0-3 v Stoke, 0-2 v Swansea, and 0-3 v Bristol City, there is also the 0-1 EFL Cup defeat at home to Grimsby as well.

Wednesday need to find a level of performance that they haven’t shown, even in their recent three match unbeaten run, if they are to get a result here.

📈 Sheffield Wednesday v Coventry Form & Stats

Coventry are still unbeaten in the Championship so far this season. They have won four and drawn four matches from their eight played, but they have won the xG battle quite convincingly in all bar one of those matches - the away 0-0 vs Leicester.

Indeed, that Leicester match is a big outlier for a number of reasons. It is the first and, so far, only time this season that Coventry failed to generate 1xG or more in chances. Indeed, Coventry have been above 3xG in chances on three occasions already this season, whilst they only concede less than 1xG per match as well.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently enjoying their best run of results in the season so far. They are unbeaten in three in the league, with a win and two draws making up that run. It was so close to two wins though, with Birmingham scoring in 90+9 to deny Wednesday a superb win in midweek.

In the season as a whole Wednesday rank 16th for xG created and 20th for xG conceded. So whilst their performances have been no match for Coventry, they are actually well in touch with their fellow relegation battlers in terms of chance creation.

This is further illustrated by the fact that they rank 10th for shots on target, averaging four per match.
