Bristol City to Win

Bristol City are strong favourites for this game given their lofty league position, and whilst that could be a bit of a false position given the opposition they've faced so far, I still fancy them to dispatch Oxford here. They have already recorded wins over Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Hull, all teams in and around Oxford at this early stage of the season. They look capable of scoring goals, Emil Riis has settled in well, with Scott Twine and Anis Mehmeti backing him up. Oxford’s better performances tend to come on home turf.

Both Teams to Score

This game last season ended 2-1 to Bristol City, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar scoreline here. Oxford United have carried a threat so far this season, having scoring twice in three of their league games, whilst Bristol City have failed to keep a clean sheet in the same number of games. The Robins have recorded the 4th best xG in the Championship so far, together with the 3rd most ‘big chances’. They do though, find themselves in the bottom half for xGA, which should give Gary Rowett’s side encouragement.

  • Bristol City have made an excellent start, winning three games out of five without tasting defeat, whilst Oxford are yet to win, but have picked up draws in their last two games.

  • The home side are the favourites, priced at 1.57. The draw is available at 3.8, whilst Oxford can be backed at 5.5. Bristol City deserve to be strong favourites for this one.

  • Under 2.5 goals is being offered at 1.8, whilst over 2.5 goals is 1.91. Not much in the prices, and I don’t have a strong opinion on how many goals we’ll see here.

🔴 Struber Gets Robins Soaring

The departure of Liam Manning and the appointment of Gerhard Struber meant that Bristol City were a bit of an unknown quantity coming into this season, after achieving a play-off finish last term. Whilst Manning’s achievements can’t be questioned, his style of play was never the easiest on the eye. Struber has wasted no time in rectifying that; City’s 12 goals scored is the 2nd-highest tally in the division.

Their good form should be footnoted with the fact that all their wins have come over teams in the bottom five, but Oxford are another side who fit into that category. Derby and Charlton, outside the bottom five, but both in the bottom seven, earned draws against The Robins.

🟡 Oxford Leaky at the Back

One trait you do not really associate with a Gary Rowett side is them being easy to score against, but that is exactly what Oxford United have been so far this season, failing to keep a clean sheet in the league.

They have had a tough start fixture wise, playing four top half sides out of five opponents. Their last two fixtures have seen a bit of an improvement, earning home draws against Coventry and Leicester, albeit a Leicester side who played the majority of the game with 10 men.

They have scored twice in three of their games, with Will Lankshear on loan from Spurs looking impressive, having notched three times already.

📊 Bristol City v Oxford United H2H

The season just gone was the first time these two sides had competed in the same league since the 2000/01 season. Oxford United have not beaten Bristol City in the league since 1999.

Last season, Bristol City won this fixture 2-1.
