Atletico Madrid to Win

It’s been far from the perfect start for Atletico Madrid, although even with that in mind, I think the bookies are underestimating their chances against a weak Mallorca side.

Atletico’s win against Villarael last time out was their first of the season, leaving them on five points with four games played. The underlying figures suggest they’ve been pretty unlucky in that respect; in fact, Diego Simeone’s men have created more open play xG than their opponents in all four of their matches so far.

Mallorca have fared even worse, mustering just a single point so far, and sitting second-from-bottom in the league. They’ve conceded almost 2x as many expected goals as they’ve racked up themselves, and were dismantled by Espanyol last time out, despite their opponents going down to 10 men as early as the first half.

Marcos Llorente to Commit 1+ Fouls

I also like the look of backing Marcos Llorente to commit at least one foul. Now starting at right back, Llorente has sinned in each of his four league matches this season, averaging an impressive 1.75 fouls per 90.

Truth be told, I don’t expect the Spaniard to sustain these numbers over the course of the entire season; however, this match in particular looks like it presents value.

Given the positions he typically takes up, Llorente is likely to be forced into engaging both Pablo Torre and Vedat Muriqi in frequent duels over the 90. The pair have drawn fouls at rates of 2.41 and 1.67 respectively this season, and have achieved similar numbers during previous campaigns.

Atletico were unable to get off the mark in the UCL at Anfield, and following a disappointing start to their domestic campaign, Simeone’s men desperately need a win here to get back on track.

  • Mallorca have mustered just one point from their opening four games.

  • Atletico sit on five points after four games, with those games featuring just nine goals in total.

  • Atletico have won each of their last five clashes with Mallorca, keeping clean sheets in the most recent four.

🔴 Mallorca Still Winless After Four Games

Mallorca are yet to show any real signs of strength this season, and while part of that can be attributed to a very difficult opening schedule, they’ve failed to impress in the straightforward matches too.

Their sole point this season came as they came from behind to snatch a point in the 88th minute against Celta Vigo in gameweek 2. It was a finely poised affair, and the best display Los Bermellones have put out all season, yet even then, they trailed their opponents on expected goals.

Defeats to Barcelona and Real Madrid in gameweeks 1 and 3 were to be expected, but it was their showing against Espanyol last time out that really raised alarm bells. Even with the boost of a penalty and a red card for their opponents on the stroke of half time, Mallorca still slumped to a 3-2 defeat, generating fewer expected goals and creating fewer big chances than a side playing with 10 men.

🔵 Atletico Finally Break Winless Streak

Although Atletico’s pragmatic style has long been a hallmark of Simeone’s tenure, even by their standards, they’ve looked short of creativity this season, with their four league games yielding just nine goals and even fewer expected goals.

Their worst-ever start to a top-flight campaign was eased somewhat by a first win of the season against Villarreal, a result that nudged them up to 8th in the table. Still, the underlying numbers told a different story, with the xG tally of 1.03-1.01 edging narrowly in the Yellow Submarine’s favour, suggesting the 2-0 scoreline may have flattered Atleti.

One bright spot was Nico González’s debut strike, offering a glimmer of attacking promise at a time when Simeone’s side badly needs it, especially with Julian Álvarez rumoured to be out for a few weeks.

📊 Mallorca v Atletico Madrid H2H

Atletico have had the upper hand in this fixture for some time, winning each of the last five encounters and shutting their opponents out in the most recent four.

If the dismal form of both sides wasn’t enough to convince you of what we should expect to see in this game, the head-to-head record is likely to. Across the last seven meetings, these sides have served up just 11 goals in total, with both teams finding the back of the net in only two of the previous 11 clashes.
