📈 Stuttgart v Celtic Form & Tactics
Stuttgart have one foot firmly in the next round of the Europa League after completely outclassing Celtic with a 4-1 victory in last week’s first leg in Glasgow. Notably, that result marked Stuttgart’s fifth win from their last six Europa League outings. It is also worth highlighting that the Red and Whites have won all four of their home matches in this season’s Europa League, further strengthening their position ahead of Thursday’s return match.
Stuttgart were unable to build on last Thursday’s success when being held to a 3-3 draw away at Heidenheim on Sunday, a stalemate that saw them end the weekend occupying 4th place in the Bundesliga.
No team has scored more goals than Stuttgart (19) in this season’s Europa League. It’s also worth noting that Sebastian Hoeness’ side have racked up three or more goals in four of their last five continental contests.
Celtic are on the verge of exiting Europe’s second-tier competition after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart in last week’s first leg. The loss marked Martin O’Neill’s second defeat across his two spells as interim manager this season, the first coming against Midtjylland during the league phase of the competition.
The legendary Celtic boss has since tasted defeat in the Scottish Premiership for the first time, with his side falling to a 2-1 loss at home to Hibernian on Sunday. That bruising setback leaves the Bhoys six points adrift of league leaders Hearts, although they do have a game in hand.
Celtic’s Europa League fixtures this season have been particularly goal-heavy, with seven of their nine matches featuring over 2.5 goals, including each of their last seven.
The Scottish heavyweights have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their nine outings in this season’s Europa League.
📔 Stuttgart v Celtic Formation & Team News
Sebastian Hoeness is expected to set his side up in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation against Celtic, a system that served the German outfit well in last week’s first leg in Glasgow.
The hosts will be forced to make at least one change on Thursday, with Jeff Chabot suspended following an accumulation of yellow cards. Angelo Stiller’s involvement is also in doubt after he was forced off in the latter stages of last week’s first leg. Dan-Axel Zagadou, Justin Diehl and Lazar Jovanovic are all expected to remain sidelined for this week’s second leg.
Throughout his two spells in charge this season, Martin O’Neill has leaned on a 4-3-3 system. It will be interesting to see how strong a lineup O’Neill fields in Germany on Thursday, with his side needing a near miracle to turn the tie around. On top of that, the Hoops boss will almost certainly have one eye on Sunday’s showdown with Rangers at Ibrox.
Alistair Johnston, Arne Engels, Callum Osmand, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Jota are all sidelined by injury, while Kelechi Iheanacho was a notable absentee on Sunday against Hibs, despite featuring in last week’s first leg.
