CALANDAGAN boasts outstanding claims of landing the G1 Champion Stakes, run over 1m2f at Ascot on Saturday, October 19th. Trainer, Francis-Henri Graffard, has confirmed the three-year-old son of Gleneagles’s participation in the huge end-of-season Grade One event at the Berkshire venue.
An impressive six-length winner of the G2 Edward VII Stakes at this track’s royal meeting, he confirmed that excellent run when runner-up to Epsom Derby and Eclipse hero, City Of Troy. His performance can be upgraded at York, coming from a long way off the pace that day.
With form on soft ground, too, any deep ground shouldn’t inconvenience the Aga Khan-bred gelding and he looks a strong contender, in a sub-standard renewal, bar the front two in the ante-post market.

ECONOMICS is the obvious danger to Calandagan, following a gutsy G1 Irish Champion Stakes success at Leopardstown. The William Haggas-trained Night Of Thunder colt was winning at the top-level last time, on just his fifth career start, highlighting his immense ability. He appears to still be progressing and is likely to play a strong hand at the finish.
With many entrants likely to swerve the race, due to running at Longchamp’s two-day Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe fixture, both Calandagan and Economics are sure to shorten in the betting, given their high-class form and almost guaranteed participation in the contest.

Following an excellent handicap success at Newbury, the son of Saxon Warrior has run with plenty of credit in a trio of Group race placings, including second in the G2 York Stakes, prior to a fine third behind a Group One winner, who reached the frame in this season’s G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The drop to this 1m2f is expected to suit and he has course form, having run on powerfully for second in the G3 Hampton Court Stakes, behind subsequent G2 Prix Dollar scorer, Jayarebe.
