Borussia Dortmund v Chelsea
Chelsea have forced 15.17 fouls per game in the Champions League this season. Only PSG’s opponents averaged more fouls in the group stage. Potter has a host of technically gifted players and they should lure their opponents into making fouls on Wednesday.
Dortmund aren’t usually a persistent fouling team but Chelsea’s pace in the wide areas should put their full-backs under considerable pressure. Mudryk is likely to feature from the left for Chelsea. He hasn’t managed to score or assist a goal for Chelsea yet, but he has looked dangerous. The Ukrainian is an extremely skilful player that likes to try and beat his man. He was fouled twice in Chelsea’s last game against West Ham and he should make a nuisance of himself here.
Julian Ryerson is likely to be tasked with shackling the dynamic Chelsea wide man. Ryserson recently joined Dortmund from Union Berlin and he has featured heavily for Edin Terzic’s side. He has played in four Bundeliga matches; scoring four goals but more importantly, he is averaging two fouls per 90 minutes played for his new side. He averaged 1.4 fouls per 90 minutes played for Union Berlin this season and those numbers could easily increase against Chelsea.
Borussia Dortmund v Chelsea
Jude Bellingham is one of the most sought after talents in European football. He is well known for his ability to play any role within the midfield and he will be integral to any success that his team have this season. The England international has featured as a defensive, box-to-box and an attacking midfielder for Dortmund this season. It is likely that he will be asked to cover as much ground as possible on Wednesday night with Emre Can operating behind him.
Bellingham has made the most fouls in the Dortmund squad this season. He has made 22 fouls in the Bundesliga and picked up five yellow cards in the process. He is averaging 1.2 fouls per 90 minutes played but Chelsea should be able to stretch Dortmund more than they are in the majority of league matches.
In Chelsea’s last five matches, every central-midfield player to play against them has made at least one foul with the exception of the West Ham game. The Hammers were sat extremely deep and their midfield players were covered by the two attacking players operating in front of them. Both of those more advanced players made fouls.
