Portsmouth suffered last-minute heartbreak against Sheffield Utd at the weekend, conceding in the dying embers to lose 1-0. That defeat leaves Pompey in 21st, a point above the relegation zone.

A midweek trip to The Valley might not be what they want either. Although Charlton sit in 18th, the Addicks are unbeaten in three after Nathan Jones’ side got one over his former club Stoke last Wednesday, winning a low-quality contest 1-0.

This is a crucial game that could see the hosts ease their fears of the drop, while an away win would keep the pressure on the bottom three.

📈 Charlton v Portsmouth Form & Stats

Consecutive 1-0 defeats leave Portsmouth narrowly above the relegation zone, and only aided by Leicester’s points deduction. But this is a chance for John Mousinho’s side to capitalise on one of their two games in hand over the Foxes.

But their poor away form suggests it could be a tough task. After beating Oxford at the Kassam on the opening day of the season, their only other away win came last month at nearly-doomed Sheffield Wednesday.

A real concern is their lack of a goal threat, something Millenic Alli has been brought in to try and resolve. In Saturday’s defeat to Sheffield Utd, Alli had six shots, three on target and hit the woodwork, so if he can link up with Colby Bishop, there’s a chance Pompey will be more threatening.

Looking at Portsmouth away data, they average 0.84xG on the road, with five of their last seven road trips seeing an expected goals total of under 1xG. In contrast, Charlton’s last three games have all seen an xG of 1.37 or higher, showing they create decent chances.

And for the hosts, Lyndon Dykes has been a useful addition. The experienced forward set up Tyreece Campbell’s winner against Stoke to move him onto two assists and a goal since joining the club last month.

In his last three, Dykes has recorded shot counts of 3, 4, and 2, hitting the target in each of those, so that’s something else to look out for, as I’d expect the hosts to have the better chances.
