With Stoke welcoming Premier League Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, their Championship game against Charlton has been brought forward.

The Potters are four points off the play-off places and will be eyeing a spot in the top seven come May, but still need to improve their attacking output.

After a promising start to the season, Stoke’s campaign is in danger of fizzling out. After back-to-back away wins at the turn of the year, the injury-ravaged Potters have picked up just three points in their last five games (D3 L2).

But their problems lie in the final third. Only 34 goals scored, just six teams have scored fewer – including Charlton – and that Achilles heel is proving a killer. Some of their early-season data was unsustainable, reliant on Sorba Thomas’ crosses flying straight in or taking deflections.

Charlton will need to make home advantage count – it’s where they’ve picked up 22 of their points. That includes a recent run of two wins and two draws from their last five here at The Valley, so Nathan Jones will fire his side up to get one over his former employers.

In the January window, they signed a few decent calibre players like Lyndon Dykes, who could be the one to pose this Stoke backline a few problems. In the 2023/24 season at QPR, Dykes scored twice as the Hoops beat Stoke, and they’ll need more strong play from the striker to record three points here.
