Chelsea v LAFC

📅

Kick Off: Monday 16th June at 20:00

🏆

Competition: FIFA Club World Cup

Chelsea are favourites to top Group D at the Club World Cup which also features LAFC, Flamengo and Esperance. LAFC only qualified for the tournament very recently, having to beat Club America in a final to book their spot at the tournament after Leon were disqualified from the competition.

Chelsea see the Club World Cup as an extension of the 24/25 season and will be eager to have a good run here to keep spirits high after qualifying for the Champions League and lifting the Conference League trophy during the regular campaign.

Remember, there are over £200 worth of free bets available ahead of the competition via our Club World Cup Free Bets Page.

Enzo Fernandez to have 1+ Shots on Target

Enzo Fernandez’s development under Enzo Maresca has been notable, with the 100 million pound man looking like he finally feels comfortable in this Chelsea side after bouncing around different positions under Mauricio Pochettino. He’ll be a player to watch throughout the tournament as he could be as influential to Chelsea as he was during the recent Conference League campaign.

Fernandez’s improvement this season is evident from his attacking numbers; he registered just 10 goal contributions during the 23/24 season, but this number jumped up to 22 goal contributions during the 24/25 campaign. This increase shows that Fernandez is more settled in the side, but also that he is now regularly playing in advanced areas, which gives him a solid chance of finding the target in Chelsea’s opening Club World Cup fixture.

Fernandez provided a goal and an assist in Chelsea’s 4-1 victory in the Conference League final which brought together Fernandez’s improvement throughout the season into one performance. He should continue to play higher up the pitch here, with the recall of Andrey Santos from loan, offering Chelsea another body that can sit behind Fernandez and allow him to influence the game higher up the pitch.

Fernandez averaged 0.61 shots on target per 90 during the 24/25 Premier League season, with this metric rising to 1.06 shots on target per 90 in the Conference League during the most recent campaign. 2+ Fernandez shots is also worth considering here, as well as backing the Argentine to register a goal contribution.

Olivier Giroud to have 2+ Shots

LAFC will have a familiar face from Chelsea leading the line when they face off on Monday evening. Giroud had a four-year stint at Chelsea between 2017-2021, during which he scored 39 goals across his 119 appearances for the Blues. He’s had 16 shots across his five starts in the MLS this season (3.08 per 90) and will be eager to make a difference against his former employers. Chelsea are still far from watertight at the back, this may be exposed more regularly later on in the tournament, but it should offer Giroud some opportunities here.

🔵 Moises Caicedo

Moises Caicedo to Commit 2+ Fouls

Caicedo was one of Chelsea’s most impressive and important players during the 24/25 season. His energy and ability to win the ball back in unlikely situations make him an invaluable asset to Enzo Maresca’s side. Caicedo averaged 1.88 fouls committed per 90 in the Premier League during the 24/25 season, which shows his eagerness to win the ball back, even if he occasionally oversteps the line. Caicedo’s main opponent here will be Igor Jesus, who has won a remarkable 32 fouls across his 15 appearances in the MLS this campaign (2.33 per 90).

💻 Chelsea v LAFC Form and Tactics

Chelsea will be satisfied with their 24/25 campaign. Enzo Maresca led the youngest side in Premier League history to a top-four finish and a European trophy, which is in line with pre-season expectations. Chelsea will obviously be eyeing up the bigger trophies in years to come with the amount of money they have splashed in recent windows, but Maresca has provided the Blues with a base that they can build on.

Not every side is enamoured with the fact that this tournament is taking place, with many players indicating that they would rather have the time off. However, the signals coming out of Chelsea are that the hierarchy views this as a major honour which is to be taken seriously, which is a view that should see Chelsea go pretty deep in this competition. The signing of Liam Delap adds some much-needed depth to the striker position, and the recall of Andrey Santos is also notable. The midfielder enjoyed an excellent loan spell at Strasbourg last season.

LAFC currently sit 5th in the Western Conference, having lost just four of their 16 games in the MLS this season. They come into this tournament on a run of 10 games unbeaten, so they are likely to be the toughest test that Chelsea face in this group. Five of these fixtures resulted in victories for LAFC. They will feel as if they can qualify from this group behind Chelsea when looking at the inconsistencies of Flamengo and Esperance.

LAFC have a few players within their ranks that will be familiar to fans of the Premier League. Hugo Lloris is their number one keeper, with Oliver Giroud operating at the other end at the age of 38. Chelsea are favourites and should be strong enough to get their campaign off to a winning start with much bigger tests to come in this competition.
