Ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, we've collated our top longshot picks for this year's Golden Boot Winner.
Julian Alvarez to Win the Golden Boot
Atletico Madrid could end up having a decent run in this competition if they can successfully manage a group which also contains PSG, Botafogo and Seattle Sounders. Diego Simeone’s side finished third in La Liga, as well as reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League where they were knocked out by Real Madrid, and the semi-finals of the Copa Del Rey where they were knocked out by Barcelona.
Escaping the shadows of Real Madrid and Barcelona has been quite difficult for Atletico Madrid this season, but they certainly have the pedigree to at least reach the last eight of this competition. Alvarez is their top scorer across all competitions this season and could follow up with a strong showing in this tournament.
Alvarez has scored 29 goals across his 54 appearances for Atletico Madrid this term, in his debut season for the club. Interestingly, Alexander Sorloth is priced slightly lower than Alvarez (19.0) to pick up the Golden Boot, despite Alvarez scoring five more goals than Sorloth in the regular season.
Alvarez boasted a strong record in the Champions League as well, scoring seven goals across his 10 appearances in the competition, which would suggest that he can perform consistently in these knockout-style competitions. Atletico Madrid will be looking to Alvarez and Sorloth to provide the goals, so both could be amongst the top contenders to claim the Golden Boot.
Cole Palmer to Win the Golden Boot
Cole Palmer has received quite a lot of criticism in the second half of the season as his performances have dropped off slightly. However, he showed signs of life towards the end of the campaign, with a particularly standout performance in the Conference League final. Palmer ended the 24/25 campaign with 15 goals across all competitions, more than any other Chelsea player.
Chelsea have been drawn into quite a fortunate group, which also contains LAFC, Flamengo and Esperance. It would be incredibly surprising not to see Chelsea top this group, given the quality and depth advantage that they hold over their opponents. Palmer can step up in this early stage to pitch in with goals, especially with his role on penalties for Chelsea.
Palmer has shown his goalscoring quality with 25 goals in the 23/24 season, and while his numbers did drop off slightly during the most recent campaign, he can be backed to return to form here. Chelsea could end up going quite deep in this competition. Enzo Maresca’s young side won’t struggle as much with the physical demands of this competition as some of the other sides, which gives them a decent chance of reaching the latter stages.
Samu Aghehowa to Win the Golden Boot
Samu Aghehowa was the subject of serious transfer speculation during the window last summer. He eventually ended up at Porto, having been heavily linked with the likes of Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.
Porto had a bit of an underwhelming season, finishing third in Liga Portugal behind Sporting and Benfica, but Samu stood out throughout the campaign. He ended the regular season with 25 goals across his 42 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese side, making him their top scorer. He also scored six goals across his nine appearances in the Europa League, which suggests that he can produce these numbers on a big stage.
Porto find themselves in a group with Palmerias, Al Ahly SC and Inter Miami FC, making them one of the few sides that don’t have another European team to play in the group stages. This should work out to their advantage and can help Samu climb up the goalscorer ladder early, even if Porto aren’t able to put together a deep run in this tournament.
