📈 Coventry v Southampton Form & Tactics

Coventry are flying towards the Premier League. Six league wins in a row have them eight points clear of Middlesbrough in second, having been overtaken by Boro only a few weeks ago. They have scored at least twice in all six of those wins as well, whilst their home form is also superb, the best in the league so far, with 45 points from 18 matches at this stage.

Indeed, only the recent 0-0 against Oxford United saw Coventry create less than 2.5 xG in their last six home matches.

Southampton’s recent form has been good. They have progressed into the quarter finals of the FA Cup, but they are also right there on the edge of the play-offs, with every chance of completing their pre-season objective of promotion as well. However, they will have to play better than they did in their last league match against West Brom. That draw ended a run of three consecutive wins, but did maintain their run of eleven matches without defeat.

That run involves a lot of away points too, they are seven unbeaten away from home, turning around an away record that was desperately poor earlier in the campaign. Southampton are still ranked in the top six in terms of expected points as well, though the two metrics of points and expected points are getting closer together as compared to the beginning of the campaign.

📔 Coventry v Southampton Formation & Team News

Coventry are without key central defender Bobby Thomas and the in-form Jack Rudoni as both are currently on the treatment table. They were able to rotate a little in midweek with Ellis Simms coming in for Haji Wright, and Brandon Thomas-Asante making a rare start too.

Thomas-Asante is likely to retain his position just behind the recalled Wright, with Ephron Mason-Clark and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto playing in the wide positions. Frank Onyeka and Matt Grimes are likely to form the double pivot in front of Liam Kitching and Luke Woolfenden, who are the only fit centre-backs in the Coventry squad. This makes a 4-2-3-1 formation, which Lampard has generally favoured this season.

Southampton have also gone back to 4-2-3-1 after spending much of the season in a back three formation. The main issue to deal with for Saints is the injury to Leo Scienza that was sustained last time out, but this could easily be solved with Tom Fellows coming into the XI.

I would expect Cyle Larin to come in for Ross Stewart as well, but there is the option to retain the same XI from midweek.
