Denmark v Sweden
📅
Kick Off: Wednesday 5th June at 18:00
🏆
Competition: International Friendly
The resumption of one of the oldest rivalries in world football occurs on Wednesday night as Denmark and Sweden meet for the 108th time in men’s international football.
Only the Danes are preparing for the European Championship on this occasion as the Swedes failed to qualify. As a proud sporting nation it is always a disappointment when Sweden don’t qualify for a major finals, indeed this is the first non-qualification for a Euros since 1996, albeit they have also failed to qualify for three of the last four World Cups as well.
For Denmark, this will be an important match to prepare for their tournament. The Danes are in Group C, alongside England, Serbia, and Slovenia. Their Euro 2020 reaching of the semi-finals inspires hope that they can again progress deep into the competition, while their World Cup 2022 disappointment in exiting at the bottom of their group serves as a warning for them not to be complacent.
This will be competitive, as Denmark v Sweden matches always are, which makes it even more ripe for betting opportunities.

Denmark v Sweden Best Bets
It is difficult to see Denmark losing this one. They have that remarkable home-friendly record, and there is no doubt that it was them that had by far the more impressive qualification campaign.
Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Blackburn Rovers team became famed for their attacking play, but also for conceding too many goals as well, so there could be chances in this on both sides.
It is tempting to side with goals here given Tomasson’s presence as coach and the seven that were scored in Portugal in March, however, Denmark’s superb defensive record is too much of a put-off to support the goal line, especially when it is the same price as a Denmark win.
Denmark to win the match at 1.91 is, therefore, the best bet, as it keeps other likely scorelines such as 1-0 and 2-0 in play. While Kasper Hjulmand may not be popular at home for his style, the form and data show that they are effective, especially at home at Parken.
⚔️ Denmark v Sweden Head-to-Head
These nations first played each other in 1913, and Denmark had the upper hand in the early days, Sweden superseded them as the 20th century progressed, but Denmark have certainly reasserted themselves in recent years.
The Danes have won five of the last eight, including the last friendly between the nations in November 2020. Though both managers have since changed, and there has been quite a turnover of players as well.
Denmark are four matches unbeaten at home against Sweden as well, a run dating back to 2000 when Jorgen Petterson won a friendly for Sweden. The 2007 European Championships qualifier between Denmark and Sweden was poised at 3-3 when a Danish fan ran onto the field and attacked the referee, Herbert Fandel, after he awarded Sweden an 89th-minute penalty. That match was awarded as a 3-0 win for Sweden, but also indicates the strength of feeling in the rivalry.
📊 Denmark Form and Stats
Denmark finished their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign on top of their group, though they were pushed all the way by Slovenia, their fellow Group C contenders in the upcoming finals.
The Danes are ten matches unbeaten at home, including the whole of the qualifying campaign, and a couple of statement wins against France and Austria are in that run as well. The last team to visit Parken and win was Croatia in the Nations League in June 2022.
It is worth noting in the Danish’s form that they are in the midst of a remarkable run of form in home friendlies. They haven’t conceded a goal in a home friendly this decade, indeed since June 2017 against Germany, but they haven’t conceded a goal at Parken in a friendly since losing to Russia in 2012.
Both teams to score have only landed in four of Denmark’s last ten matches, over 2.5 goals has landed in four of their last ten as well. There is pressure on Kasper Hjulmand at home to make more use of his attacking talents and to let them play with a little more freedom. Denmark only managed two goals against San Marino and the Faroe Islands, and failed to register against Northern Ireland or Switzerland recently.
📊 Sweden Form and Stats
We know already that Sweden failed to qualify for the Euro 2024 finals, but the manner of the failure was what left Swedish fans the most aghast. Soundly beaten at home by Belgium and Austria, and thrashed in Azerbaijan 3-0, there was no way back from that for former coach Janne Andersson.
The irony ahead of this particular match is that Andersson has been replaced as head coach by Jon Dahl Tomasson, the Danish record international goalscorer. Tomasson has presided over two friendlies so far, a 5-2 defeat in Portugal and a 1-0 win over Albania, his more open and attacking style has already been evident in the team’s play.
The Swedes have actually won three of their last four, albeit two of them were against Estonia.
