Celtic ensured they led the Scottish Premiership at Christmas thanks to a 2-0 win at home against Livingston, but they face a more difficult test on Tuesday v Dundee at Dens Park.
The Dark Blues were left frustrated at the weekend when their clash against Aberdeen was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. There was less than an hour before kick off when the field failed a pitch inspection, leaving both teams unhappy with the situation.
Tony Docherty’s side have been going well this season and threatened an upset against Rangers earlier this month when they took the lead at Ibrox before succumbing to a 3-1 loss. That is only three losses for the newly promoted side since they went down 3-0 against Celtic in Glasgow immediately after the September international break.
Celtic, meanwhile, are not finding the going easy presently. The Hoops lost successive league matches for the first time in a decade before overcoming Livingston at the weekend, yet even that was something of a slog.
With conditions set to be less than optimal in this game and a clash against Rangers forthcoming at the weekend, this is a potential banana skin for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

🏆 Match stats: Fresh legs of Dundee looking to capitalise
With 14 wins from 19 matches, Celtic naturally start this encounter as red-hot favourites to claim all three points, yet the context of this game will make life difficult for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Try as they might, there will be at least half an eye on Rangers at the weekend, and that is likely to be reflected in the team selection.
But Celtic’s overall form has been less than spectacular lately. Since the international break in November, the only truly comfortable outing they have had was a 4-1 home victory over Hibernian.
Dundee, meanwhile, come into this game fresh after not playing on Saturday, while their home record is robust, with just two defeats at Dens Park all season. The 5-0 loss to Rangers is a warning that they could be well beaten, while they also suffered a 3-0 loss to Celtic when the sides met at Parkhead in September.
Celtic look too short at 1.22 in the match odds betting. Given 11 of their 14 wins this season have come by at least two goals, it would be better value to back the Hoops at -1 at 1.83.
Supporting Dundee with a +3 advantage also looks a smart bet given the context this fixture will be played out in, albeit the odds of 1.25 are conservative.
Predictions:
⚽ Dundee (+3 handicap) @ 1.25
🎯 Shooting stats: Turnbull to shine for rotated Hoops
Rotation is likely to come into play for Celtic on Tuesday, which is something worth bearing in mind for a Dundee v Celtic bet builder. In particular, the visitors are coming off an intense period of fixtures and will want their players in prime condition for Rangers at the weekend, meaning some significant changes are probable.
David Turnbull is one of those who is likely to come into the starting XI for this match, with the midfielder posting more shots on target per 90 than any other Celtic player at 2.11. He is someone well worth keeping an eye on in this fixture for multiple efforts on goal.
On the contrary, Celtic’s other leading shot takers are all vulnerable to be rotated. Kyogo Furuhashi might have ended his goal drought at the weekend but Rodgers may prefer Hyeon-gyu Oh, whose five Premiership goals have all come at home.
Matt O’Riley does tend to get big minutes no matter the circumstances so is arguably the best bet of the regulars to hit the target.
Dundee, meanwhile, will certainly do better than Livingston, who failed to get any kind of shot away against Celtic at the weekend in a Scottish Premiership first.
Docherty’s side are unlikely to pose a great threat, with Luke McCowan and Amadou Bakayoko the two to look out for in the shots market from the hosts.
Predictions:
⚽ David Turnbull to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.73
⚽ David Turnbull to have 2+ shots on target @ 4.50
🟨 Card stats: McCowan to see yellow
Again, Celtic’s likely rotation will impact a bet builder, with bit-part winger Mikey Johnston a possible player to keep an eye on in this market. Although he averages only 45 minutes per game, this is the type of fixture he could start in. He averages 2 fouls per match. Nevertheless, he represents something of a risk given that James Forrest and Hyun-jun Yang were preferred to him at the weekend.
The only other Celtic player to average more than 1 foul per game is right back Alistair Johnston, who could be rested. Greg Taylor is liable to get more minutes due to Celtic’s lack of credible replacements. He averages less than a foul a game but does have three yellow cards, so this is a market to explore.
Leading Dundee’s foul count is Owen Beck, yet it has been suggested that Liverpool might exert some influence for him to be left out given Kostas Tsimikas’ injury on Saturday. With the Greek set to miss months out, the Reds need a left back quickly and he might be just the man. Still, if he is omitted, he is likely to be so entirely, so is something of a risk-free gamble.
Luke McCowan is another home player liable to commit a foul or two. An energetic midfielder, he will surely put himself around in this encounter, and with the match likely to be played on a sodden surface, any misjudged challenge could be punished significantly. With three yellow cards already this season, and up against a technically sound Celtic midfield, the ingredients are here for a booking.
Predictions:
⚽ Owen Beck to commit 2+ fouls @ 2.30
⚽ Luke McCowan to be shown a card @ 4.33
