England U21 v Slovenia U21

🗓️

Kick Off: Sunday 15th June at 17:00

🏆

Competition: U21 European Championship

Lee Carsley’s U21 side got their campaign off to the perfect start with a convincing 3-1 win over Czechia. The Three Lions were dominant in the game, having 68% of the ball and having 14 shots, six of which found the target. Tino Livramento was a standout performer at left back, picking up an assist in a Player of the Match display.

Slovenia were blown away by a Nick Woltemade hat-trick in their opening game of the U21 European Championships against Germany. They did have 61% of the ball in that game, but struggled to convert this into any substantial attacking threat, managing just three shots on target in the game.

England looked really sharp in their 3-1 win over Czechia and a win here could secure progression from the group, before their most difficult task of the group stage as they face Germany in the final game. Lee Carsley has experience in this tournament having led the Three Lions to victory in this competition back in 2023, the squad has changed since then but there is still plenty of talent on display - four of the starting XI against Czechia featured regularly for their club sides during the 24/25 Premier League season.

Slovenia were exposed far too easily by Germany in their opening game of the group stages. It was a performance that will have disappointed head coach Andrej Razdrh after watching his side top their qualifying group, notably beating France to top spot. They weren’t rewarded for this with the draw placing them alongside England and Germany in the group stages - two of the favourites to go all the way and lift the trophy.

England can be trusted to continue their bright start to the tournament and secure progression to the knockout stages against a Slovenian side that has already shown that they can be defensively vulnerable against the talent that England possess. Jon Rowe is a player worth watching for England here, he played as a striker against Czechia and scored England’s second goal.

📊 England U21 v Slovenia U21 Form and Tactics

England look set for another deep run in this tournament under the tutelage of Lee Carsley, who has repeatedly demonstrated excellent tactical knowledge with U21 sides. England won the tournament back in 2023, beating Spain in the final thanks to a free kick from Cole Palmer before his explosion onto the main stage as a Chelsea player. Carsley will feel optimistic from his side’s performance in the opening game, and the Three Lions can secure progression to the knockout stages here with a victory over Slovenia.

A few players stood out in England’s opening game of the tournament against Czechia. Tino Livramento was exceptional in the game, operating from left back and managing to register an assist - he was a level above the majority of players on the pitch and looks ready for a step up to the senior squad, especially given his ability to operate in both full back positions.

The front four was also bright, Lee Carsley is no stranger to experimenting with the positions of players and tactical instructions, as many will remember from his brief stint as the manager of the senior side. Harvey Elliott and Jon Rowe scored while James McAtee provided an assist. The depth in this England side is also worth noting. Lee Carsley was able to bring on Ethan Nwanieri and Jay Stansfield from the bench, which is a level of depth that is largely uncontested when compared to other sides in the competition.

Slovenia’s 3-0 defeat to Germany in their opening game of the U21 European Championship will slightly dampen their spirits, which were high following their promising qualifying campaign. Slovenia managed to top a qualifying group which included France and Austria, winning five of their eight games and only conceding seven goals.

They were caught off guard by Nick Woltemade’s strike just before the 20-minute mark, and Germany took advantage of this indecision to score a second just before half time, all but condemning Slovenia to defeat in their opening game of the tournament.

📊 England U21 v Slovenia U21 Head-to-Head Key Stats

Slovenia actually have a very solid record against England in the three head-to-head meetings between the sides since 2019.

Slovenia ran out 2-1 winners in the most recent meeting between the sides, which was in 2022 during the qualifying process for the 2023 tournament. The other two head-to-head meetings in recent years have ended in 2-2 draws.
