📈 England Qualification & Recent Form

England faced criticism following their performance against New Zealand last time out. The fanbase still don't quite seem to understand the concept of a friendly, with every result leading to an outcry of opinion - most of which is reactionary and doesn’t take into account the other slip-ups we’ve seen from big nations in friendlies.

England won all eight of their qualifying matches without conceding a goal. Again, this achievement probably hasn’t drawn the praise it deserves, as qualification has now become the bare minimum for many England fans following Gareth Southgate's tenure, which has made dreaming of the latter stages of an international tournament a normal expectation.

There are some reasons to be concerned about England’s chances and general mood ahead of the World Cup. I don’t think we’re going to see brilliant football from England, which naturally will irk a few people who didn’t enjoy the style under Southgate - but Tuchel is adamant that England can only go far if they stick to the principles of the Premier League, which means set pieces and a very physical style of play.

I’m a bit concerned about Tuchel’s general temperament. He’s excellent in knockout competitions, but the fact remains that he’s fallen out with someone at every single club he’s been at. I’m not sure how he will react to the intense media scrutiny that England face at an international tournament, or how strong his relationship with the players will be in a seven-week camp where there are bound to be disagreements.

📈 Costa Rica Recent Form

Costa Rica won’t be at the World Cup this summer, having failed to come through the CONCACAF qualifying process, with both Honduras and Haiti finishing above them in a small group of four sides.

Costa Rica do have experience of being at a World Cup, having qualified for the competition back in 2014. That tournament saw England and Costa Rica face off in the group stage, with Costa Rica holding England to a 0-0 draw.

It’s probably one of the weakest Costa Rican sides we’ve seen in recent years, demonstrated by their poor record in qualifying. They do have some talent and a bit of grit, which can cause England problems, though Tuchel’s side should comfortably have enough to battle past them even if it takes them a while to break down the side.
