The wait is almost over as the 2026 World Cup gets underway on Thursday night, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in the tournament opener.
With all three of their Group A fixtures set to be played on home soil, Mexico will be looking to make home advantage count from the outset.
South Africa, meanwhile, are back at football's showpiece event for the first time since 2010, though they face a daunting opening assignment against the co-hosts.

📂 Mexico v South Africa Cheat Sheet
📈 Mexico Qualification & Recent Form
As one of the co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, Mexico secured automatic qualification for the tournament. As a result, Javier Aguirre’s side have been filling their schedule with a series of friendly fixtures, the most recent of which saw them dismantle Serbia in a 5-1 victory. Mexico are now unbeaten in each of their last eight outings.
Raul Jimenez and Edson Alvarez will be familiar faces to Premier League followers, while Gilberto Mora has the potential to emerge as one of the breakout stars at this summer’s World Cup.
Luis Angel Malagon and Marcel Ruiz will both miss out after injuries ruled them out of the final squad.
📈 South Africa Qualification & Recent Form
South Africa are set to return to the global stage for the first time since they hosted the tournament in 2010. Hugo Broos’ side finished top of their World Cup qualifying group, recording five wins across their 10 matches.
However, results have dipped since then, with Bafana Bafana exiting the Africa Cup of Nations at the last-16 stage before failing to win any of their 4 subsequent friendlies, drawing three and losing one.
Burnley forward Lyle Foster will be the most well-known name to fans of the Premier League, but it is goalkeeper Ronwen Williams who stands out as arguably South Africa’s most important player.
Aubrey Modiba is doubtful, while Mohau Nkota and Thapelo Morena are ruled out through injury.
