Lauren James to have 1+ Shots on Target

Lauren James has been one of England’s most important players during this hectic run to the final, and has a strong chance of finding the target in the showpiece event of the European Championships.

I’ve backed Lauren James a few times throughout the competition for goal contributions, shots and shots on target - she usually delivers. James has had 14 shots across her five matches in the competition (3.59 per 90), with four of these attempts finding the target (1.03 per 90). She'll be England's biggest threat going forward.

Both Teams to Score

England’s run to the final has been a lot more chaotic than Spain’s dominant run to the final two. The Lionesses have seen BTTS in four of their five matches, and their backline will have to put in their most complete performance of the tournament to quell the tournament’s top scorers (17 goals).

England slightly altered their backline against Italy, with Esme Morgan coming in for Jess Carter, but even this switch leaves England light at the back which should mean that the Lionesses will have to find the back of the net here to match the scoring power of Spain.

Esme Morgan to Commit 1+ Fouls

Esme Morgan stepped into the England backline in their 2-1 victory over Italy after extra-time. She looked a lot more assured than Jess Carter at centre back alongside Leah Williamson, with Carter struggling to deal with the speed of the opposition forwards at times.

Morgan was shown a yellow card in England’s victory over Italy and will be regularly challenged here by Esther Gonzalez, who has scored four goals across her five appearances at the European Championships. Morgan looks a nice price for just one foul.

  • England have seen both teams score in four of their last five matches

  • Spain beat England 2-1 in their last meeting, but that win was the only one in the last five head-to-heads

  • Spain have impressed more during their run to the final, with England relying on moments to reach this stage

Sarina Wiegman’s side are just about still alive and kicking in the Women’s European Championship after surviving scares against Sweden and Italy. They now face their toughest test of the tournament so far up against the strongest international side in the women’s game.

England Aiming to Retain the Title

England’s run to the final has been a thrill inducing and memorable ride. This run feels even more impressive than last time around, with England overcoming every obstacle thrown in their direction. They'll face their toughest task yet against a Spain team who are regarded as the best women's national team in the world.

When assessing key players for England here, there are two that stand out that could make the difference for Sarina Wiegman’s side - and they’re both part of a new crop of talented players coming through.

Michelle Agyemeng stole the headlines for her 95th minute equaliser against Italy to ensure that England kicked on in extra-time to secure their progression to the final, but it was actually Esme Morgan who allowed England to maintain a solid base at the back, after struggling in the early stages of the tournament. Morgan should get the nod to start again here, while Agyemeng is likely to continue to deputise for Alessia Russo.

🔴 Spain Remain Clear Favourites

Spain were favourites before a ball was kicked and they remain the favourites to lift the trophy. While England tripped and stumbled their way to the final, Spain’s run to the final two was a lot smoother and reflective of the superior quality that they have compared to the other European nations.

Spain’s 1-0 win against Germany in the semi-final was arguably their best performance of the competition so far, with La Roja needing to dig deep to ensure that they saw off the threat of the Germans. Hannah Hampton will have to be on top form here, just as Berger was in regular time against the Spanish, as England are likely to face relentless pressure at times from how Spain are able to keep hold of the ball and pen the opposition in their own half.

📊 England Women v Spain Women H2H

The most recent meeting between these sides was in the Nations League back in June. Spain ran out 2-1 winners after falling behind early on, they were pretty dominant in the game with 63% of the ball, as well as dominating the shot count (19-4).

However, this recent victory is the only win that Spain have managed against England across the last five head-to-head meetings between the sides.
