Cambuur v AZ Alkmaar
🏟
Sunday 28th August – 3:45PM KO
The goals finally come flooding through for Cambuur in their 1-4 win at Fortuna last weekend. They included some magnificent strikes from outside the penalty area. Cambuur have some decent midfielders playing behind striker Roberts Uldrikis, and the last time they played at home, they created chance after chance against Excelsior, but unbelievably managed to lose 0-2.
AZ played on Thursday, but I can’t see them being as exhausted for their trip to Friesland. There seems to be a new-found energy amongst the staff and players, which could drive them onto a successful season where many doubted them in pre-season (myself included).
This will be a tough game for the Alkmaar club, especially defensively. Reserve goalkeeper Hobbie Verhulst continues to play instead of usual number one Peter Vindahl, but neither ‘keeper has convinced in the last 12 months. In addition, AZ are still bedding in youngster Milos Kerkez at left-back, and Yukinari Sugawara has somehow not regained his berth at right-back after coming back from injury.
That all being said, AZ do have the attacking players to hurt teams in this league, and Cambuur were often a favourite for both teams to score last season.
