🏆 Spain v England
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 14th July at 20:00
The Barcelona teenager certainly has a style that has been fairly predictable at the tournament so far but is very difficult to stop.
Yamal’s shot map gives a big clue as to why this is such a good longshot bet. Yamal has taken 16 shots in total, with 11 of those coming from outside of the box. Interestingly, all 16 shots have been with his left foot, which demonstrates Yamal’s modus operandi of cutting inside from the right flank where he is deployed and letting fly with his left.
In most cases the opposition will be in a low block, or at least have some men behind the ball, which means that the route to goal is often a strike from outside the box. His goal against France in the semi-final is probably the archetypal example of what we are looking for, and surely he will have the confidence from that to try again.
🚀 Free Kicks
An added bonus to this bet is the fact that Yamal has also taken a few free-kicks in this tournament.
He has taken responsibility for three direct free-kicks from the right half of the pitch, which is generally favoured for the left-footed taker due to the angle.
Whilst he hasn’t yet been successful with his attempts, it is still a bonus for this longshot that he has the opportunity to convert one of these if they come around.
🎯 Long Range Efforts
Yamal’s Barcelona shot map from outside of the area re-emphasises that his movement from outside to in and shooting is a natural thing for him to do.
Barcelona have been more flexible in how they have deployed Yamal across the forward line, perhaps showing that his future could be more central as he develops, but that area on the right of the opponent’s box is clearly an area favoured when Yamal plays for his club as well.
🥊 Lamine Yamal v England
England, for all of their faults, are usually fairly well organised, and they certainly have a strong analysis department, so they will be well aware of Yamal’s tendencies and patterns. However, they will also be more concerned about giving away higher value chances, and, despite Yamal’s excellence, they would probably prefer him to be shooting from distance rather than inside their box.
At the same time we are happy to take the chance that one of the shots from distance will find its way past Jordan Pickford. The England goalkeeper was beaten from distance by Xavi Simons in the semi-final with a shot that many believe could’ve been saved by other world-class goalkeepers. Morten Hjulmand also scored against England with a long-range shot, though this one did crash in off the post.
However, it does seem to be a tactic that opponents are happy to try against Pickford and this lends more weight to the wager.
