🔎 Jack Wright’s Best Bet of the Week
🏆 Reading v Leyton Orient
“We are hoping for a little rub of the green in this week’s column. Last weekend saw our pick Barrow take the lead only to have their goalkeeper sent off just before half time and with no back-up on the bench right-back Rory Feely pulled on the gloves. Danny Butterworth’s speculative 98th minute poke squirmed past Feely to earn Swindon a 1-1 draw and in doing so snatched a loss from the jaws of victory for us.
Now that’s off my chest let’s get back to winning ways with what looks like a huge piece of value from League One.
Despite multiple points deductions and constant off-field issues which included players and staff going unpaid, Reading comfortably avoided relegation from the third tier last season. Nine points clear of the drop zone 17th was a false position given their penalties, but I think that has been overlooked when pricing the Royals this term.
Having joined from Southampton last summer manager RubĂ©n SellĂ©s has galvanised the club and enjoys hero status among the fanbase. After a period of transition acclimatising to the nuances of League One his high-pressing, energetic team have changed to a 4-3-3 formation becoming more compact with a focus on winning second balls.Â
“Making the Select Car Leasing Stadium something of a fortress laid the foundations for what in context was an excellent season with only six teams in the division picking up more points on home soil. Optimism in Berkshire was fuelled by a strong pre-season which saw impressive victories over Championship trio Watford, QPR and Hull.Â
Despite a tough opening four fixtures which included an opener against champions-elect Birmingham plus promotion hopefuls Wrexham and Charlton the Royals sit in eighth. The Welsh league leaders are the only side to have beaten them while they ended the Addicks three game-winning run with a superb 2-0 victory ahead of the international break.
That made it two wins from their first two league home games to start the campaign and Reading also won in the EFL Trophy when they hosted West Ham’s youngsters. Harvey Knibbs, Lewis Wing and Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan have started the season in sparkling form and have the perfect opportunity to improve their blossoming reputations further this weekend.
Rock-bottom Leyton Orient have begun their league campaign with four straight defeats. They too had a tough start with games against Bolton, Charlton and Birmingham but the 3-0 hammering at Shrewsbury would have rung the alarm bells loud and clear. Those are the only points Salop have picked up from their five fixtures.
The O’s managed just six shots at The Croud Meadow only one of which was on target despite dominating the ball with 73% possession. Two road trips, two defeats, no goals scored from just 14 shots and a combined xG of 0.78 certainly make for grim reading.
Richie Wellens’ opinion that it was his team’s worst performance since he became manager certainly backed up those stats. A similarly slow and lethargic showing will result in an equally emphatic away defeat this weekend but even with a vastly improved display I still can’t see Orient leaving Berkshire anything but empty-handed.”
