Celtic v Rangers Fouls Sheet
Celtic v Rangers
The fourth Old Firm derby of the season is a critical one in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.
Victory for Celtic would open up a virtually unassailable 12-point advantage with seven matches but if Rangers were to sneak the points for the first time in a league meeting since August 2021, the race for the crown would suddenly be opened up with one clash between the sides still to come at Ibrox after the league splits.
There is little doubt that Celtic come into this match as justifiable favourites. Ange Postecoglou’s side have been a winning machine, dropping points in only two league matches this season and posting a perfect 15 wins from 15 matches at Celtic Park, where they have scored 47 and conceded only nine this season.
The last time that Celtic failed to win a match was their 2-2 draw with Rangers at Ibrox on January 2, with the Gers also going perfect in the league since that time. Michael Beale’s side, meanwhile, did lose the League Cup final against the Hoops 2-1 at the end of February. They may have been slightly less spectacular than their opponents in terms of the goals they have scored, but they have been equally effective.
With that in mind, a typically feisty derby encounter is expected. Here’s our bet builder for players to commit fouls in this fiery clash.
Whether Rangers start with Alfredo Morelos or Antonio Colak in attack, Carter-Vickers will be faced with a physical striker to tackle in this game. The American has been no stranger to committing fouls in this match in the past. In each of the last two matches between the clubs, he has committed at least two fouls. Expect him to be put under pressure in this match, and the type of forwards that Rangers are set to deploy mean that he is likely to be drawn into the odd mishap. He comes with the added bonus that he is unlikely to be taken off in this game. The 25-year-old has bot been replaced in any of his appearances for Celtic this season and in a match of the magnitude, that is unlikely to change.
Ryan Kent will find himself up against the tenacious Alistair Johnston, which promises to be a battle between two extremely competitive players. It is likely to be a tit-for-tat exchange in terms of free kicks, though with the Celtic defender on offer at just 1.33 to commit one foul, the odds clearly favour putting money on the Rangers man. Kent is a player who tends to get frustrated and give up free kicks when things don’t go his way – and facing Johnston is likely to prove extremely challenging for him. When the pair met in the League Cup final, Kent gave away a foul, and the odds on him doing so again are extremely tempting given he has committed at least one foul in seven of his last 12. Backing him to commit two or more fouls at 5.0 is also interesting given this would be a winner in four of those last 12.
The central midfield area of the field is bound to be extremely competitive in this match and it is difficult to see Rangers’ destructive midfielder John Lundstram going through the game without committing an infringement. The 29-year-old is unlikely to play 90 minutes but that is unlikely to stop him committing at least one foul – he has played 79, 66 and 73 minutes in the three previous matches against Celtic and given away at least one free kick in each game. Indeed, he has given away free kicks in 15 of his last 20 appearances, with two of the games he did not infringe in substitute appearances of 14 minutes against Hibs and 11 minutes against Ross County. As a key defensive figure, he will surely start this match. Celtic’s Reo Hatate (1.33) and Matt O’Riley (1.2) are both likely to give away free kicks, too, but the caveat here is that it is unclear who will start due to the Japanese carrying an injury. O’Riley gave up five fouls in the previous match at Celtic Park and is 2 to commit at least two infringements here. If he starts, that is a strong bet.
