Guaireña v Sol de América
🏟
Friday 21st October – 9:00PM KO
Guaireña are back at home where they have fared well recently winning four of their last five games, they face a Sol de América side who have won just once away since April. The Albiceleste continue to fight for a Sudamericana spot, currently sitting 2 points behind Resistencia who are in the final spot for continental competition.
Troadio Duarte was disappointed to not score against 12 de Octubre in last week’s game, his pre-match plans were scuppered early on by Rosalino Toledo’s red card. The experienced midfielder is likely to be replaced by Víctor Ayala on Friday. It was the fourth game in five that they failed to score, but worth noting that three of those matches were away and one was on neutral ground (vs Olimpia). In Villarrica they have scored in eight consecutive games and average 2.2 goals per game in their last five which includes match ups against Libertad and Nacional.
Pablo Guiñazú earned an impressive point against Libertad in the last match, but the stark numbers show that he has only managed one win in his last six and that game against bottom side 12 de Octubre. The glimmer of hope for the danzarín is Fatecha’s form as the 24-year-old attacking midfielder scored his first senior goal in September and has added two more in the last two games. The issues have been in defence, they have now conceded 27 goals which is more than any other team in the division. Right back Víctor Barrios picked up his fifth yellow card and will be suspended alongside Argentinian midfielder Rodrigo Castro who was also booked. Interestingly central defender José Leguizamón has been carded in four consecutive games and will have to toe the line to avoid suspension himself.
Guaireña’s good form in their hometown coupled with key suspensions for the opposition means they should be odds on favourites in this game. Consider also that Sol de América are practically safe from relegation and almost mathematically out of the Sudamericana race, there is little motivation for the visitors who are waiting for the season to end.

Olimpia v General Caballero
🏟
Saturday 22nd October – 11:30PM KO
Olimpia come into this game fresh off a thrilling superclásico victory against Cerro Porteño, won by a spectacular scissor kick from captain Richard Ortiz. It has put Julio César Cáceres’ team in with a chance of winning the league knowing that they are just two points behind Nacional who they will play on the final day.
For the sixth game running Olimpia went into the break in the lead, Derlis González scored the early goal this time his 13th league strike in 2022. The return of Richard Ortiz from injury was a huge boost, not just his goal, but also reforming the midfield partnership with Marcos Gómez that has been developing throughout the year. A flurry of yellow cards in the derby does mean that both Alejandro Silva and Iván Torres are just one booking away from suspension – but they are still set to feature. Mateo Gamarra is back from suspension and will likely slot back into central defence at the expense of Zarate.
General Caballero have been well organized under Humberto Ovelar, conceding just one goal in their last five matches. They’ve also picked up three wins in that period giving them a slim chance of getting into the Sudamericana. They will be missing Wilder Viera (suspended) who had formed a good midfielder partnership with captain Junior Barreto. Veteran Osvaldo Martínez could make a rare start in his place, although worth noting that the two times he has played a full 90 minutes General Caballero haven’t managed to score.
Despite the visitors recent revival, it is hard to look past an Olimpia side that has won five in a row and is back to full strength. El Decano have also been very strong at the Manual Ferreira in the league winning 11 of their last 13 with two draws. The last defeat was to Nacional back in April. In contrast General Caballero have just one win in Asunción since May when they defeated Nacional.
