Fulham v Wolves Cheat Sheet
Fulham v Wolves
Fulham continue to impress in the league this season and an important win against Brighton last weekend means they sit 6th in the league and could go equal on points with Newcastle in this match if they get the win here. Aleksandar Mitrovic may be fit enough to return in this match while Tom Cairney will still be unavailable. Apart from these two injuries, Fulham have almost their full squad to choose from and the return of Manor Solomon recently from long term injury has also been a huge boost to them.
Wolves have impressed recently with 3 wins in their last 5 matches including key wins against West Ham and Southampton, however a loss to Bournemouth in their last match means they still sit just 3 points above the drop. Wolves don’t have any new injuries to worry about and Mario Lemina is now back from suspension after his sending off in the Southampton match, however he may not be brought straight back into the squad here.
Since Lopetegui’s appointment as Wolves boss, the improvement from Wolves has been clear. Wolves have moved themselves out of the relegation zone and while the loss in their last match to Bournemouth was disappointing, they are still in a good position to avoid relegation. Wolves chance creation is much improved and since Lopetegui’s appointment they have registered at least 3 shots on target in 9 of his 12 matches.
The 3 times where his team didn’t have at least 3 shots on target were at home to Liverpool, away against Manchester City and at away at Southampton when they had 10 men for the majority of the match. Fulham have been open at the back this season and have been somewhat lucky that they have conceded just 30 goals this season from 39.6 xG. Only Brentford have allowed more shots on target per 90 than Fulham this season, they allow 5 shots on target per 90 on average. Only 5 times this season have Fulham conceded less than 3 shots on target and in their last 11 matches, only Nottingham Forest and Chelsea have failed to have at least 3 shots on target for them.
Despite Harry Wilson starting on the wing in Fulham’s last match, Manor Solomon’s performances have surely been enough to get him into the starting line-up here. Solomon has come on with less than 20 minutes to play in both of Fulham’s last 2 matches and scored in both matches. Having returned from a long term injury sustained in his first match of the season, Solomon is starting to show why Fulham signed him. He is averaging 3.07 shots on target per 90 in his limited minutes so far this season and has had a shot on target in 4 of his last 6 matches, despite only playing over 20 minutes in 2 of these 4 appearances. Solomon has been spectacular so far in limited game time and has all the attributes to have at least 1 shot on target in this match.
Raul Jimenez is likely not fit enough to start in this match so Adam Traore will continue to be the focal point of Wolves attacks. Traore draws 2.04 fouls per 90 and his dribbling and pace will be key against a Fulham team which commits so many men forward. Antonee Robinson will be starting at full back and as one of Fulham’s fastest players he will likely be responsible for getting back and stopping Traore.
Robinson commits 0.89 fouls per 90 this season and has committed 6 fouls in his last 5 matches. I think Antonee Robinson will struggle in this match against Adam Traore and this will likely end in him committing at least 1 foul.
Julian Lopetegui likes his sides to play good football, this is what made him such a big manager in the Spanish leagues before he came to England. Wolves have got forward under Lopetegui and win more corners now than they were at the start of the season under the previous manager. Wolves win 5.09 corners per match on average and had 12 at home in their last match against Bournemouth.
Since Lopetegui took over, 5 of 8 league matches have seen Wolves win over 3.5 corners, they only failed to do so with 10 men against Southampton, against Liverpool and away at Everton in Lopetegui’s first league match in charge. Fulham concede 5.67 corners per match, the 5th highest in the league and have conceded at least 3,5 corners in all of their last 8 league matches. Wolves need a result in this match and have pacey attackers that can profit off Fulham pushing forwards which I think could see Wolves win a lot of corners, therefore I am backing Wolves to have over 3.5 corners.
