We’ve looked at the stats for Germany ahead of the World Cup so you don’t have to. The Germany team features a whole host of players who love to try their luck. There should be plenty of value to be had in this winter’s tournament.
🏆
World Cup 2022 begins Sunday 20th November
Germany
Germany are 6th favourites for the World Cup with most bookmakers. They exited the competition in the group stage in 2018. Becoming the 3rd consecutive World Cup winner to do just that. Hansi Flick has since replaced Jaochime Lowe as the manager. After a blistering start, the progress has slowed under the new man. Die Mannschaft have won just 1 of their last 7 games. They will need to ensure they come out of the blocks quickly to get out of the rut.
Germany have some quality players, but they have lacked a goal scorer in the Nations League. No player scored more than 2 for them in that tournament. Many players will need to contribute if they are to pick up their 4th World Cup. We will look at the numbers from their qualifying campaign here. Flick will be hoping the team revisits the form that got them to Qatar.

Goal Contributions
Top 3 – Goal Contributions In Qualifying
1️
Leroy Sane – Goals: 4 Assists: 2
2️
Serge Gnabry – Goals: 5 Assists: 1
3️
Ilkay Gundogan– Goals: 5 Assists: 0
Leroy Sane
The winger was electrifying in qualifying. He found the net 4 times and picked up 2 assists. Sane has featured as 1 of 3 players behind a striker in Germany’s recent matches. His combination of pace and close control make him difficult to stop. He has shown a real eye for goal in recent years.
Sane has 9 goals and 3 assists in 15 matches for Bayern this season. The front line for the German side has seen a dramatic change with the departure of Lewandowski. Bayern haven’t been as swashbuckling as you might expect in the early games. But Sane has still shone.
Serge Gnabry
Next, we go to another wide man who plays his football at Bayern Munich. Serge Gnabry was a potent goal threat during qualifying. It’s easy to see why for those who watch him play for his club. He likes to cut inside and dribble with the ball, and his finishing ability is excellent. He scored 5 and assisted 1 during qualifying.
Gnabry has 6 goals and 6 assists for Bayern this season. But he has had to fight for his place fiercely. The former Arsenal man has 12 starts and has made 8 appearances from the bench. Gnabry has scored 14 and 10 league goals in his last 2 Bundesliga seasons. Showing the level of consistency Germany can depend on this winter.
Ilkay Gundogan
Timo Werner would have been on this list instead of Gundogan, but injury has ruled him out of the World Cup. There will be an even greater onus on the Man City midfielder to contribute in terms of goals with Werner absent. Gundogan scored 5 goals during qualifying; 2 of which came from the penalty spot.
Gundogan has been a key player for City for a number of years. He scored some vital goals at the tail end of last season. He has started this campaign with 2 goals and 2 assists in the Premier League.
Shooting
Germany are averaging 15.7 shots per game in their last 10 internationals. Flick’s men were in a Nations League group with England, Italy and Hungary. So the amount of shots is good for the quality of the opponent.
Top 3 – Shots In Qualifying (Per 90 Minutes)
1️
Serge Gnabry – Qualifying: 4.22, Club Football This Season: 3.93
2️
Leroy Sane – Qualifying: 3.2, Club Football This Season: 4.12
3️
Ilkay Gundogan – Qualifying: 3.23, Club Football This Season: 2.05
Serge Gnabry
Serge Gnabry took the most shots (27) for Germany in the World Cup qualifiers. He played more minutes than Werner, which explains why he is top of the shooting charts. Gnabry averaged 4.22 shots per 90 minutes in the campaign. The right-footed wide player operates on both flanks. He also likes to drift into more central areas of the pitch for Germany.
Gnabry is averaging 3.93 shots per 90 minutes for Bayern this season. 11 of his 39 overall shots have come from outside the area. So expect him to occasionally try his luck from distance when the tournament begins.
Leroy Sane
Leroy Sane has the 3rd highest average shots per 90 in qualifying. But he recorded the second most shots overall. The former City man had 24 shots over the course of the campaign. An average of 3.2 shots per 90 minutes.
Sane has had 46 shots for Bayern so far this season. He is averaging 4.13 shots per 90 minutes. He and Gnabry are both averaging over 4 shots per 90 for the Bavarian side. It is a similar setup to the national side, where there is not just one main goal threat. Sane has had 19 shots from outside-of-the-box this season. So outside of the box shot specials for the Bayern wide men look like a good bet.
Ilkay Gundogan
Gundogan had the 4th most shots in qualifying with 21. The other 2 players on this list and Timo Werner were the only ones with more. The midfielder averaged 3.23 shots per 90 minutes throughout the campaign. 3 of his efforts came from the penalty spot.
Ilkay is surrounded by many more attack minded players at Man City. He is still averaging 2.05 shots per 90 minutes for Guardiola’s side. He has less responsibility to get on the scoresheet for his club, but he is still a threat for the opposition. Gundogan’s knack for coming up with goals at the right time could prove to be crucial in Qatar.
Shots on Target
Germany averaged 7.3 shots on target in their last 10 international matches. This means that 46.5% of their shots find their intended target.
Top 3 – Shots On Target In Qualifying (Per 90 Minutes)
1️
Leroy Sane – Qualifying: 1.33, Club Football This Season: 1.67
2️
Ilkay Gundogan – Qualifying: 2, Club Football This Season: 0.873
3️
Serge Gnabry – Qualifying: 1.72, Club Football This Season: 2.01
Leroy Sane
Sane had 10 shots on target in qualifying. These all came from open play and he averaged 1.33 shots on target per 90 minutes played. With Werner injured, Sane and Gnabry will have to step up to the plate. They have both done so for Bayern after Lewandowski’s departure. Flick will be relying on the pair to provide the attacking threat.
The winger is averaging 1.67 shots on target per game for Bayern this season. He has featured on both flanks and as a number 10.
Ilkay Gundogan
Ilkay Gundogan also had 13 shots on target in qualifying. Including the 2 penalties Gundogan converted, he averaged 2 shots on target per game; meaning 54.1% of his shots hit the target. The midfielder did miss from the spot in the campaign, and he doesn’t always take penalties at club level. So it is far from certain he will be on spot duty in Qatar.
Gundogan averages 0.73 shots on target per 90 minutes for Man City this season. Pep Guardiola’s side features Erling Haaland as the focal point in attack. So a drop-off in shots for the others isn’t a shock.
Serge Gnabry
Gnabry found the target with 11 shots. He averaged 1.72 shots on target per 90 minutes during the campaign. His tendency to shoot from outside the box meant that just 40.7% of his shots hit the target. But his unpredictability will be an asset for the Germans.
The amount of shots on target that Gnabry has for his club is very similar. He is averaging 2.01 shots on target per 90 minutes for Bayern this season. He is part of a very fluid Bayern attack under Nagelsmann. This means he has the opportunity to shoot in a number of areas on the pitch.
