Hammarby v Mjallby

🗓️

Kick Off: Thursday 22nd May at 18:00

🏆

Competition: Swedish Allsvenskan

  • Only once has either team been held scoreless this season

  • Over 1.5 goals in the last 5 head-to-heads, over 2.5 in 4 of those 5

  • Mjällby beat Hammarby 3-1 at home in April

Hammarby come up against Mjällby in a title contender clash, the home team sitting in fourth spot and the visitors topping the table.

Both sides have been in a rich vein of form, Hammarby collecting nine points in the last five matches while Mjällby have won four of their last five.

Hammarby are clear favourites, priced at 1.72 for a home win, the draw giving odds of 2.88 and a Mjällby win, somewhat surprisingly at the odds of 4.2.

Both teams have been involved in high-scoring matches this season, averaging 2.6 and 3.1 goals per game, respectively. The odds for over 2.5 goals are somewhat reflective of this, very evenly priced at 1.9 for the over and 1.87 for the under.

Considering the fine goalscoring form of both teams this season, having seen at least two goals in 85% of matches combined, over 1.5 goals at 1.29 is very attractive. In addition, this has materialised in the last five head-to-heads, and when they last met in mid-April, it finished 3-1 to Mjällby.

Hammarby have only failed to score once this Allsvenskan season, playing out a 0-0 draw away at AIK last weekend. Mjällby, even more impressively, have scored in every single one of their matches. As such, both teams to score at 1.80 looks a steal.

Finally, with recent H2H history in mid, as well as a combined 55% of their matches containing at least three goals, 1.9 for over 2.5 goals makes sense probability-wise.

🟢 Hammarby’s Yo-Yoing

Hammarby undoubtedly have one of the best squads in the division, possessing both strength in depth and real quality in most areas of the pitch. They have conceded the fewest goals in Allsvenskan (7) while scoring the third-most (19).

There has, however, been a lack of consistency, not winning consecutive matches since mid-April, dropping points every other game since. This has held them back from pushing to the top of the league, sitting two points behind Mjällby.

Hammarby’s home form is, by all means, hugely impressive, winning four and drawing one, scoring 12 goals in 5 matches.

Their underlying figures hold up too, creating 1.59 xG per match and only conceding 0.87. They tend to control games, averaging 61.1% possession, and can suffocate opponents. The only drawback to date is a lack of end product on occasion, with tipped top scorer Jusef Erabi struggling for form and injuries, only scoring twice to date.

🟡 Mjallby's Mighty Title Charge

Mjällby deservedly lead Allsvenskan after ten rounds, being the most consistent and dangerous team early in the season. When other teams have faltered, their form has remained steady, winning seven of their last eight games, only losing, somewhat unfortunately, to AIK.

They have already beaten Hammarby (4th), Häcken (6th), and Djurgården (11th), all strong sides, taking another step in their development since last season. Their attacking prowess is a new feature, previously being rugged defensively but lacking somewhat in flair and creativity. This season, Nicklas Røjkjær has made a real difference from midfield, bagging five goals and adding two assists, while top scorer Abdoulie Manneh (6 goals) has had a breakthrough campaign.

Mjällby’s away form is impressive (3-1-1), only losing to AIK and drawing with Elfsborg and winning the other three, scoring 12 goals.

Central midfield anchor Jesper Gustavsson, who has played every single minute to date, is suspended here, making the midfield slightly weaker defensively.

📊 Hammarby v Mjallby Head-to-Head Key Stats

Just over a month ago, Mjällby put Hammarby to the sword, winning 3-1 at home. While the scoreline was somewhat misleading and flattering to the hosts, they took their chances extremely well and didn’t let Hammarby back in the game when going two goals up. Mjällby had an xG of 1.19 with 2 big chances, while Hammarby amassed 1.42 xG and only one big chance.

The last five head-to-heads in all competitions have averaged 3 goals per match, with two wins each and a draw. There is rarely a dull encounter between two of the most exciting teams in the league, and with both teams looking for a win in this game to claim top spot, we can expect more of the same.
