Hammarby v Sirius
Kick Off: Wednesday 14th May at 18:00
Competition: Swedish Allsvenskan
Hammarby are unbeaten against Sirius in their last 11 matches, winning nine.
Both sides have been involved in high-scoring matches this season, averaging 2.63 and 2.75 goals per game, respectively.
Hammarby sit in 2nd, three points off AIK at the top of the league.
Sirius are hugely inconsistent and can’t seem to get regular wins under their belt, only winning twice in eight matches this season.
Hammarby look to carry on their title challenge with a win against Sirius here, having stumbled and dropped crucial points against Norrköping at the weekend. They do, however, remain in second place, above Mjällby on goal difference and three points off rivals AIK. Sirius are at the wrong end of the table, in 13th place out of 16 teams, but find themselves on a slight upward trajectory.
The match odds reflect the discrepancy in squad strength and table position between the two sides, Hammarby being clear favourites at 1.4 to Sirius’s match odds of 7.
Goals are to be expected, considering how both teams have been playing to date, with the over 2.5 goals odds of 1.62 reflecting this.
⭐ Hammarby v Sirius Predictions and Best Bets
Hammarby are clear favourites for good reason, and while getting them to win at 1.4 is a decent bet, the more attractive angle here lies in the goals markets. Both historical head-to-head data and the teams’ performances this season point towards a high-scoring affair. We have seen over 2.5 goals in 10 of the 12 last meetings between these two in all competitions, and with the average goals per game of 2.69 for both sides, a bet on this line at 1.62 looks appealing.
The exact same line (1.62) appears for Hammarby to win and over 1.5 goals in the match – a home win is expected and needed to keep up with other title contenders, and as I highly doubt the match will be won by a 1-0 scoreline, this is another solid bet, with Hammarby seeing over 1.5 goals in all their Allsvenskan matches this season.
Finally, a bit more of a punt on the -1 Handicap line on Hammarby should be considered at 2.1, the Stockholm side having won all but one of their home matches by at least two goals this season.
🟢 Hammarby’s Inconsistent Title Challenge
Hammarby are as expected one of the main challengers for the league title, somewhat surprisingly usurped by Stockholm rivals AIK to date. It could, and probably should, be even tighter at the top, with Hammarby showing some inconsistencies of late, drawing 1-1 away to an injury-stricken Häcken and at home to IFK Norrköping last Sunday. The latter was down to poor finishing, amassing 22 shots equalling 1.83 xG.
It was their first dropped points at home, having beaten top contenders Malmö FF and Djurgården by a 2-0 scoreline at 3Arena, while pumping IFK Göteborg 4-0 in the season opener. This makes them the best home team in the division.
Two starters in left-back Shaquille Pinas and central midfielder Tesfaldet Tekie are missing here due to an accumulation of yellow cards, however, their replacements will be able to deputise adequately with a deep squad.
Each time they have dropped points this season, Hammarby have bounced back with an impressive victory, a trend which should continue here.
🔵 Sirius Quietly Improving
Sirius have picked up five points in their last three matches, only gaining four in the previous five. While there has been a general improvement in overall play, they remain porous defensively, only keeping one clean sheet to date, conceding 1.55 xG per game on average.
Last weekend’s 2-0 win over Häcken was impressive, having less of the ball (36% - 64%) but creating more than their opponents (1.44 – 0.92 xG).
They remain a point off the relegation playoff spot, having collected 9 points from 8 matches, although only a point separates them from 7th position.
Leo Walta has been pivotal, scoring four goals in the last four matches. He is leading the way with other star players such as Joakim Persson and Noel Milleskog struggling to find the net.
📊 Hammarby v Sirius Head-to-Head Key Stats
This is the first meeting between the two sides this season. In their two encounters last year, Hammarby emerged victorious by a 3-0 scoreline both home and away. They deserved the three points on both days but did overperform their xG substantially, amassing a total of 2.75 xG across two games, compared to Sirius’s 1.26 xG.
Hammarby tend to win this match-up – we need to go back to August 2020 to find the last Sirius win. We also normally see high-scoring affairs, the last four Allsvenskan meetings between the two containing three or more goals.
