Inter Milan and Napoli will meet in the Italian Super Cup Final as they contest the first silverware of the season. This is the first time the competition has featured four teams, and these sides came through their respective semi final matches to set up this mouthwatering clash. Having staged last week’s Spanish Super Cup Final, the KSU Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia will now host this spectacle.
Simone Inzaghi’s side made light work of Lazio in their semi final, winning the game 3-0 as they completely bossed proceedings to storm into the final. Inter Milan have claimed this title on seven occasions and will be looking to add to their tally to provide a winning platform for the remainder of the campaign as they look to retain the trophy they won last year when beating bitter rivals AC Milan 3-1.
Like their opponents, Napoli themselves cruised into this showdown having comfortably beaten Fiorentina 3-0 earlier in the week. That was a more closely fought contest, but it was Walter Mazzarri’s side that prevailed and he will now attempt to lead his side to a third Italian Super Cup. Last season’s Scudetto winners won this trophy in 2014 and 1990 when the legendary icon Diego Maradona starred.

🏆 Match stats: Inzaghi to inspire victory
Inter Milan are currently on an incredible run of form and it’s difficult to see past this classy and effective outfit winning back to back Italian Super Cup titles. The win over Lazio in the semi final means that Inzaghi’s side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions (within 90 minutes) to 21 games, and incredibly, they have lost just once all season, which was a surprising defeat to Sassuolo.
This season has also seen their defence keep 16 clean sheets in all competitions, in fact they have only conceded 10 goals domestically in the league, and their defensive solidity was on display during the previous meeting between these two sides as Inter Milan ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. At the other end, they have been deadly in front of goal, scoring 49 in Serie A as they lead the xG charts.
Mazzarri’s second spell in Naples has yet to bear fruit as the victory over Fiorentina in their semi final was just his fifth win in 12 matches and they will likely need something special if they are to prevail here. In truth, they were outplayed for large parts of that game as the Viola missed a penalty and squandered a number of clear cut chances, and it’s unlikely this Inter Milan side will be as forgiving.
Predictions:
⚽ Inter Milan to win @ 1.67
🎯 Shooting stats: Martinez the main man
Lautaro Martinez has been the standout player in this Inter Milan side this season and he’s fancied to rise to the occasion here and is certain to influence proceedings. Following the departure of former strike partner Romelu Lukaku, the Argentinian has forged a new relationship with summer recruit Marcus Thuram, and it’s those two that have had Inter Milan firing on all cylinders this campaign.
The Nerazzurri’s talisman is currently averaging 1.48 shots on target this season in Serie A, racking up a total of 25 thus far, and he arrived in Saudi Arabia having had at least one on target in his previous five games, one of which came against Napoli in the last meeting between these sides. Martinez provided an assist during that game and a similar big performance is expected again here.
In terms of his goal contributions, the forward has scored 18 in the league this season at a rate of a goal per game, and he’s sure to eclipse his best ever scoring season having amassed 21 in the past two campaigns. Martinez has also scored a couple in this season’s Champions League, proving he’s a player for the big occasion, and he’s backed to get himself on the scoresheet in this exciting final.
Predictions:
⚽ Lautaro Martinez to have 1+ shot on target @ 1.25
⚽ Lautaro Martinez to have 2+ shot on target @ 2.30
⚽ Lautaro Martinez to score anytime @ 2.25
🛑 Foul stats: Discipline issues for Cajuste
Inter Milan are currently averaging 11.40 fouls per game in Serie A having committed 228 in their 20 games this season, and that’s more than their opponents who average 10.15 fouls. In the fixture earlier this season, Inzaghi’s side fared worse on the discipline front as they committed 13 fouls to Napoli’s 2. Delving deeper into that particular match, it highlights a couple of likely candidates.
Francesco Acerbi was guilty of bringing down his opponents on two occasions in that game and has 13 fouls in his 17 games in the league this term. Defensive partner Matteo Darmian also committed 2 fouls in the previous head to head and struggled against Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who is one of the most fouled players in Italian football. The right back also has 16 fouls in 19 appearances this term.
For Napoli, there is one standout that could draw the attention of the officials here. Midfielder Jens Cajuste looks to be a little vulnerable in this game in a very combative area of the pitch. The Swede has made 17 fouls in 16 appearances this term, collecting 7 yellows. He’ll be up against Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitatyan all of whom draw plenty of fouls between them.
Predictions:
⚽ Matteo Darmian to commit 1+ foul @ 1.30
⚽ Francesco Acerbi to commit 1+ foul @ 1.83
⚽ Jens Cajuste to commit 2+ fouls @ 1.91
⚽ Jens Cajuste to be shown a card @ 3.0
⛳ Corner stats: A game full of corners
These two sides are very productive when it comes to winning corners this season. In fact, in Serie A, Napoli lead the league on the corner count having racked up an impressive 127 in their 20 matches, that’s an average of 6.35 per game. Inter Milan are not far behind their opponents, ranking 3rd in this area with 114 corners won during their games in the league, and that’s a decent average of 5.7.
During their respective semi final wins over Lazio and Fiorentina, both sides had plenty of joy when it came to corners. Inter Milan racked up 7 in their victory, winning the Corner Match Bet at a canter, shutting their opponents out completely. Despite seeing less possession, Napoli still managed to gain 4 corners in their semi final, and it would be no surprise to see both sides winning a few in this one.
When looking back to the previous meeting in the league this season, there were corners aplenty and all the evidence points to something similar in their latest encounter. On that occasion, Napoli won the Corner Match Bet 6 to 4, and given the seasonal average of both of these sides, backing both to win at least four corners each is sensible, especially with the width that these two sides play with.
Predictions:
⚽ Over 3.5 Inter Milan corners @ 1.20
⚽ Over 3.5 Napoli corners @ 1.65
