Latvia v Albania

Competition: World Cup 2026 Qualifying

  • Latvia tend to be quite blunt in forward areas, only scoring one goal in qualifying so far.

  • Albania have been on an upward trajectory over the last few seasons and managed to reach the EUROs last summer.

  • Albania have avoided defeat in both of their qualifying matches since losing to England.

England will have one eye on this game as Albania and Latvia face off in Group K, with each side hoping to be the team that can compete with England at the top of this qualifying group. Albania lost to England in their opening game but recovered with a win over Andorra (3-0) and a well-earned draw against Serbia (0-0).

Latvia have also already faced England with Thomas Tuchel’s side running out 3-0 winners at Wembley. Latvia did manage to register a 1-0 victory over Andorra in their other qualifying game so far, but this is the only goal they’ve managed to score across their two games.

Albania will feel that second place in this group is there for the taking. England are heavy favourites to top Group K with three wins from their three games in the group so far, which would suggest that they’re a level above the majority of sides in Group K.

Albania can take confidence from their performances in qualifying for the European Championships last summer. They topped their group, which also included Czechia and Poland, losing just one of their eight matches. They only conceded four goals across these games and followed up this qualifying campaign with a valiant effort in the group stages of the European Championships, despite being drawn into the group of death.

Albania can be a really stubborn side to play as their record during EURO qualifying suggests. Latvia may struggle to break them down, given the lack of attacking spark they’ve had across their opening two qualifying matches.

🔴 Blunt Attack Holds Latvia Back in Competitive Fixtures

Latvia lost their opening game of qualifying against England at Wembley, following this up with a 1-0 win over Andorra, which wasn’t particularly convincing. Latvia only had six shots in that game, which suggests that their attack is a bit blunt and can be managed with a proper defensive structure.

Latvia’s struggles for goals is also true when looking at their performances in the Nations League. They were drawn into a group with North Macedonia, Armenia and the Faroe Islands and still really struggled to create and convert chances, only scoring four goals across the six games. They only managed to win one of these games, which indicates that their lacklustre forward line is costing them in games.

Latvia finished bottom of their group when attempting to qualify for the European Championships last summer. They only won one of their eight games in the group, conceding 19 goals and once again only managing to breach the opposition backline on five occasions, showing that their lack of attacking ability is something that has plagued the national side for a number of years.

Improving Albania Aim to Cement Their Progress in Group K

Albania are a nation that is steadily improving its reputation on the international stage, with their performances at the European Championships last summer garnering plenty of attention, despite the Albanians exiting in the group stages of the tournament as a result of being drawn into a group that featured Spain, Italy and Croatia.

Albania did finish bottom of their Nations League B group, but it was a competitive group with just four points separating group leaders Czechia from Albania at the bottom. Albania did manage to avoid defeat in three of their games and showed that they are a level above the tag of ‘minnows’.

Albania topped their qualifying group to reach the European Championships last summer and will fancy the challenge to be the best of the rest with England seemingly on course to top Group K.
