England v Senegal

📅

Kick Off: Tuesday 10th June at 19:45

🏆

Competition: International Friendlies

England take on Senegal in a friendly at Wembley following a mixed start to Thomas Tuchel’s time in charge of the Three Lions. England have won all three of their games in World Cup qualifying so far, but these were all games they were expected to win and the victory over Andorra last time out raised several questions about the direction of this England team under Tuchel.

Senegal are one of the top sides in Africa and will be a stern test for Thomas Tuchel’s side. They’ve not lost a game since September 2023, which shows their dominance on the continent. Senegal are currently unbeaten in their World Cup qualifying group, only conceding one goal across the six matches.

Sarr is generously priced to have just one shot against England on Tuesday evening. He comes into this game having scored against Ireland in their 1-1 draw against England’s neighbours last time out in a friendly match. He’s scored once so far in World Cup qualifying for Senegal across his five appearances.

Sarr managed 59 shots across his 38 Premier League appearances during the 24/25 season for Crystal Palace (1.96 per 90) and can be a threat to England with his speed and willingness to run in behind. England struggled a little with this in their 1-0 win against Andorra and while their opponents didn’t quite have the quality to finish off these opportunities, Senegal should be more clinical with the attacking options they have in the side.

Sarr has scored 15 goals across his 60 caps for Senegal, so he has been a consistent threat for his country in recent seasons and can take advantage of the lack of speed in the England backline to register at least one shot in this friendly fixture. Sarr occasionally plays through the middle for his nation, which would further aid this selection.

Madueke was England’s brightest player in their 1-0 win over Andorra. The majority of the side attracted criticism for their lassiez-faire approach to the game but Madueke received praise for his active role on the left hand side, a role he had been playing for Chelsea towards the end of the season. Madueke registered an assist and had three shots in the game, with two of these finding the target. This shows that he can still be a shot threat, despite playing on the left wing. Madueke averaged 1.41 shots on target per 90 across his 32 appearances in the Premier League during the 24/25 season - more than any other Chelsea player.

🟢 Iliman Ndiaye

Ndiaye is part of a stacked Senegal frontline which can cause England problems. He averaged 1.36 shots per 90 for a pretty defensively minded Everton side during the 24/25 season and could expose England in the wide areas if Thomas Tuchel chooses to experiment with those positions again here as he did against Andorra, with Curtis Jones lining up as an inverted fullback.

📊 England v Senegal Form and Tactics

England drew widespread criticism for their performance against Andorra, despite the victory marking a significant achievement for Thomas Tuchel in becoming the first ever manager to win all three of their opening games in charge of the Three Lions to nil. This mini milestone was not enough to appease the press and demanding fan base who were brought back to Gareth Southgate’s tepid football on Saturday night.

Tuchel did acknowledge his side’s shortcomings in the game, claiming that he wasn’t happy with how his side ended the game. It’s clear that Tuchel was using the game as an opportunity to experiment, with Curtis Jones lining up as an inverted right back and Reece James tucking into the left-hand side of a back three when England had the ball. The attack took on an interesting structure as well, with Madueke, Rogers and Palmer playing in behind Kane. Madueke was the biggest success story from the game, but it would be surprising to see Tuchel return to this structure as it wasn’t effective, even against a side like Andorra.

Senegal have established themselves as one of the top sides in Africa over recent years and come into this friendly having not lost a game since 2023. Their defensive structure is particularly impressive. Across six games of qualifying for the World Cup, they’ve only conceded one goal, which may prove problematic for England given how much they struggled to put the ball in the back of the net against Andorra last time out.

Senegal’s main threat in an attacking sense to England is likely to be with their wide players. They have a lot of speed, which isn’t replicated in the England backline, which can help the visiting side catch out the Three Lions on the break. Ismaila Sarr, in particular, could prove a real headache with no obvious player in the England backline that can match him for speed.
