Romania v Cyprus

Kick Off: Tuesday 10th June at 19:45

🏆

Competition: World Cup 2026 Qualifying

  • Romania will be hoping to bounce back from defeats against Bosnia and Austria in Group H.

  • Cyprus have scored in both of their qualifying games so far, Romania are yet to keep a clean sheet across their three qualifying games.

  • These sides faced off in the recent Nations League campaign with Romania coming away comfortable winners on both occasions.

Romania will be hoping to keep pace with Bosnia at the top of Group H when they host Cyprus on Tuesday evening. Romania had a memorable campaign during the European Championships last summer, qualifying from the group and reaching the knockout stages. They’ll be eager to book their place at the World Cup next summer but face stiff opposition from Bosnia and Austria.

Cyprus have won one and lost one of their opening two games in Group H. They saw off San Marino without too much trouble but fell to a 2-1 defeat against a Bosnia side that has won all three of their qualifying matches so far. Cyprus have managed to score in both of their qualifying games so far.

Romania will feel slightly disappointed by their start to qualifying. Their 2-1 defeat against Austria last time out was a competitive battle, but it was their defeat to Bosnia which may prove more costly, especially as it was on home soil.

Cyprus shouldn’t be underestimated, they managed to rack up 11 shots and an xG of 1.39 against Bosnia in their recent qualifying game. Romania are yet to keep a clean sheet in Group H, with even San Marino managing to get on the score sheet against them.

Romania have scored six goals across their three qualifying games so far, and while they should have the overall beating of Cyprus, the away side can threaten their goal as they’ve shown in their two qualifying matches so far.

🟡 Romania Look to Bounce Back After Stuttering Start

Romania will be hoping to emulate their qualifying performance to reach the European Championships last summer. They topped a group which also featured Switzerland, winning six of their 10 matches and avoiding defeat throughout the campaign.

Their main strength was defensive solidity, only conceding five goals across these matches while scoring 16 themselves. No side had a better defensive record during the EUROs qualification than Romania. They’ve already conceded four goals in this qualifying group, which may suggest that their defensive rearguard isn’t as solid as it was a few years ago.

Romania topped their Nations League C group, winning all six of their matches in a group that contained Kosovo, Cyprus and Lithuania. They scored 18 goals in the group and only conceded thre,e which would suggest that they're a level above those sides and can make a push for qualification in Group H.

Cyprus Showing Signs of Progress Despite Tough Fixtures

Cyprus picked up their first win in qualifying with a comfortable 2-0 win over San Marino. They couldn’t replicate this result against Bosnia with the current group leaders running out 2-1 winners, but they did put in a good account of themselves in managing to generate an xG of 1.29, which indicates that they’ll offer an attacking threat in this game.

Cyprus struggled in their recent Nations League campaign, in which they finished third in a group of four, only managing to win two of their six games and conceding 15 goals in the process. They only managed to score four goals themselves across these matches.

📊 Romania v Cyprus Head-to-Head Key Stats

These sides faced off recently in the Nations League. Romania ran out comfortable winners on both occasions, firing seven goals past Cyprus across a 3-0 and 4-1 victory for Mircea Lucescu’s side.

Cyprus received a red card in their 4-1 defeat to Romania which may be worth noting seeing as they also received a red card in their 2-1 defeat to Bosnia last time out which may indicate that the away side have a discipline problem which could come to the fore here if they are frustrated again.
